Age 89
Eleanor Elizabeth Pinckney Smith, age 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 18, 2025, in Oxnard, California.
Born on February 3, 1936, in Salina, Pennsylvania, to Leona Weathers and William Pinckney, Eleanor—affectionately known by many as “Honey,” “Ellie,” and “Ellie Cat”—grew up on a family farm after her family relocated to Charlestown, West Virginia. She graduated from Page Jackson High School and later joined the United States Air Force at a young age, beginning a life of service, strength, and perseverance.
In September 1973, Eleanor moved her family from Charlestown, WV, to Oxnard, CA, alongside her mother and two sisters, where they laid down strong roots and became part of a vibrant, extended community.
Eleanor was well-known and loved across the country—from West Virginia to California—for her warm spirit, generosity, and deep devotion to family and friends. She was a passionate fan of old Westerns ("Cowboys and Indians"), an avid newspaper puzzle enthusiast (KenKen, Cryptoquip, Sudoku, Boggle Brainbusters, and more), and a joyful dancer. She cherished her outings with her “F14” friend group, gym time at Hueneme Base, and most especially, watching her great-grandchildren play football, volleyball, and run track.
She looked forward each year to her month-long vacation to Charlestown to attend the Page Jackson High School Reunion, Gospel Fest, and St. Phillips Episcopal Church Homecoming, reconnecting with old friends and extended family.
She is survived by:
Her sister, Willa M. Doleman
Her children: Michelle D. Berry, Doreena M. Vaughn (Johnny), John S. Smith III, and Rana L. Augustus (Tommie)
Seventeen grandchildren
