Frank Mendez Gonzales
March 29, 1931 – October 14, 2018
FRANK M. GONZALES “F.G.”- Passed away in his home on Sunday October 14, 2018 at the age of 87 years young. Frank will forever be remembered as father, grandfather, great-grandfather, self-employed business owner, entrepreneur and retired U.S. Army Veteran.
Frank was born in San Diego CA, March 29, 1931 to Maria Luisa Mendez Gonzales and Francisco Gonzales. Frank was the youngest of 7 children, brother to Manuel Gonzales, Louie Gonzales, Daniel Gonzales, Mary Soto, Susan Lang, and Margaret Gonzales.
At a young age Frank moved to Oxnard with his Mother to live with his Sister Mary and husband Ruben Soto. Frank was a student at Oxnard High School where shortly after joined the National Guard, then the US Army and sent to fight for his country in Korea as an artillery operator.
After serving in the Army, Frank returned to Oxnard and married his wife of 40 years, Margaret Varela and secured a job at Point Mugu and Oxnard Air Force Base as a painter. He then decided to start his own landscape business, serving the government at Port Hueneme Naval Base, Point Mugu AFB, Long Beach Naval Shipyard and Vandenburg AFB which provided over 75 employees with jobs. Frank was very passionate about being a small business owner and being helpful to his family and friends thru employment.
Frank was known throughout the community and local business owners through his participation in providing maintenance services to many local companies such as Northrop Ventura, 3M Company, Basso Distributing Camarillo, Twin Centers Mall and City of Oxnard. Frank spoke with pride of his company and employees for their job completed in the 1980s and one of their major successes, where his company installed the crib wall surrounding the Titan Missile launch pad as holding well while the Titan launched into the sky from Vandenburg AFB.
Frank also shared his life with Josefina Garcia Gonzales, his partner for many years. Together they enjoyed spending time with family, their God-daughter and their rescued dog, FiFi.
Frank was a golf enthusiast, loved music, singing and was a member of his church choir at Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church in Oxnard in the 1960s-70s. He was most happy when he was spending time with his brothers, friends and family, playing pool and enjoying a nice glass of wine.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to share in the celebration of life for my former boss FG, We were treated to the most beautiful rendition of Amazing Grace I had ever heard in my life by his granddaughter Jennifer Gonzales not sure if it was because she was singing to her grandpa or just the fact that she is really good at singing but that was amazing. I remember one time going to the home office in Oxnard and FG told me how proud he was of the work I had been doing at Vandenberg for the company, we did very good on that contract and had it for almost nine years we were the only game in town maintaining all of the different areas on base from housing to the missile silos to the airfield and everything else in between. For me it was an honor and pleasure to had been part of FG Landscape inc.
Until me meet again, DESCANSA EN PAZ FG

First and foremost my heart and condolences goes out to his wife Josefina and his entire family. He was our next door neighbor for almost 20 years! He was one of a kind. He was the first person to greet my wife Elizabeth when she purchased this condo at the villas with a smile and asked how could he help. Over the course of many years, we became not just neighbors nor friends but family. We had dinners together, shared drinks with one another. He always had something to say in his booming FG voice which we loved so much, it was never a simple hello or goodbye but a REAL conversation. He was always positive giving you the latest 411 anyway he could help you. You couldn't ask for a better friend! Never the same talk, he kept you on your toes lol. We shall miss you so much, this world will never be the same! RIP FG and If we know you as we do he's probably asking GOD to sell him a piece of heaven to sell it to us one day when we meet him again!

FG was my oldest living best friend. We had some many good times, including doing business together which brought allot happiness to me and made me appreciate the fact that our friendship will always be a memory of good times. We kept in touch for so many years; We would meet to have a shot and beer, lunch or he would visit me at home to reminisce our past business deals, discussed family issues and always proposed to each other ways to solve the many issues and problems we had at the moment. I met FG just after his company completed SLC 4 project that consisted of the wall he built that he was so proud of. I am so proud and happy that we worked together thereafter, and during the time that he developed FG landscape into a major player in the landscaping and maintenance industry. We attended several business conferences, seminars and networking luncheons together, not knowing that he considered me his protégé. He was always so enthusiastic and outgoing, meeting strangers and business people was never a problem. Always had positive opinions of people, friends and family no matter the situation.
In addition to FG being so positive about life, he was a real big heart, always there to help his friends and family financially and to offer advice when requested. I will never forget his sayings, "whats up aye"; "working on a deal": "no digas nada y la gallina es tuya"; "es la rata". I will always remember his business deals in music, gold mines, oil, herbalife, and recently in real estate. He continued to pursue business until the day he passed.
I will always remember FG as a best friend, mentor and a person that made the days I shared with him some of the happiest of my life. I share my sadness for his passing and my happiness for our friendship with all his family, friends and his wife Josefina.
We will all miss you FG. RIP.

Condolences to Frank Gonzales wife and family. My memories of Frank. He was a no nonsense person when it comes to work. He was a board member of The Villas Home Owners Association where he lived. He worked hard helping to keep the community clean and safe. He will be missed riding his bike through the neighborhood assessing, what and where improving was needed. He welcomed new neighbors and made himself available to help those in need. Frank you will be missed. Thank you for caring for our association and being a kindhearted board member and neighbor. I was surprised by the news of his passing; yes, when a person is of an advanced age it shouldn't be so,but in this case it actually was because he was still living for a future; his demeanor was so positive and still enjoying his life,I perceived.I always referred to him as "Mr Gonzales" but later as an adult I quickly became so relaxed around him, that I once Iet slip out a" Frank" and it did not seem to be something to matter to him,Mr Cool and Relaxed I thought.
My Father,Juan Lagunas Soria "Big John" had so many compadres, many of them close, but if you ask me which one was who he would probably most keep up with and regularly see, I surmise it was his Oxnard High School friend, Frank Gonzales.
