Mel was born on Aug. 19, 1925, in Toledo, Ohio. He passed away peacefully on Jan. 7, 2012.
Mel originally came to Port Hueneme in 1960 as a member of the Seabees and settled there with his family. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, retiring from the service in 1968. He later retired from the U.S. Navy civil service in 1983.
He was an usher and longtime parishioner of Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Mel enjoyed spending time with friends at the VFW and at the Eagles. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, FRA and the American Legion. He traveled every summer back to Toledo, Ohio, to attend the annual La Grange Street Polish Festival with his relatives but especially enjoyed celebrating the festivities with his brother-in-law, Chet Szaroleta. He was proud to say that he had been to every one since they began.
His wife of 56 years, Helen, and his daughter, Cheryl, preceded Mel in death. Mel is survived by his daughters, Cindy and Cathi (Victor); his sons, Gary (Stephanie) and Greg (Todd); and his grandchildren, Jeremy, Tori (Joe), Eric and David. Also surviving Mel is his companion, Audrey.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12, with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at the Funeraria del angel Conrad's & James Reardon, Oxnard. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Oxnard. Interment to follow at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura.
