Born in Central City Kentucky, he was the son of Everett and Willadene Shanks. He graduated Bremen High School. After high school, he joined the Air Force and was stationed overseas. When he returned home he married his sweetheart and they had two sons. He retired from Hydro-Chem where he worked as a dedicated chemist and was known for his strong work ethic.
Rex was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His calm demeanor and sense of humor made him liked by everyone who knew him. He was a member of Gainsville Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, watching Kentucky basketball and being outdoors. He passed on his love for many of these hobbies to his sons and grandchildren. He also enjoyed his wife's delicious cooking, spending time with his grandchildren and teasing his sister-in-law Joyce Sisk.
The sacrifices and choices he made in life will continue to have a positive impact in his family's lives. He was always grateful for the diligent caregiving his wife gave him the last few years. Their playful flirtation during 64 years of marriage existed until the very end. There won't be a day that passes where he won't be dearly missed.
He is survived by his spouse Marilyn Shanks, his son Brian Shanks, his sister Linda Dillon, grandchildren Megan Paxton, Robert Paxton, Tessa Shanks, and Nikki Wellman, great grandchildren Aiden Shanks, Owen Curtis Paxton, and Marvel Wellman. He is predeceased by his son Curtis "Tony" Shanks.
