Edith H. “Pwee” Fladmark was born 19 February, 1925 in Kershaw County, South Carolina, the first-born and oldest daughter of sharecropper farmers, Samuel and Grace (Baker) Hunter. She attended country schools and helped her parents plant and pick cotton until she left home to become a real “Rosie the Riveter” – working in a munitions plant in North Carolina testing TNT for 40mm anti-aircraft shells. When the Army Recruiters visited the plant, Edith and her best friend signed up and headed to Ft. Oglethorpe, GA to join the fledgling Woman’s Army Corp (WAC). Soon afterward, she was transferred to Beaumont General Hospital, Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas as a Medical Technician. There she met the love of her life, Lorentz W. “Flad” Fladmark, and they married soon afterward. Captain of their basketball team, “Sergeant” Hunter was honorably discharged from the Army and immediately joined Civil Service to support her new husband now in Officer’s Candidate School. The consummate Officer’s Wife, Edith traveled the world with her husband while rearing four children. Upon her husband’s retirement as an Army Aviator, they settled down in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida. PWee, affectionately called “The Little General”, survived her husband, grandson-Oliver S. Gaylor and her son-Patrick H. Fladmark. High Energy, Spirited, Generous and fiercely devoted to her family, Edith was also a founding member of Space Coast Chapter #64 of the Women’s’ Army Corp Veterans and one of the original Administrators for P.A.F.B. Army Readiness Group where she worked for more than 23 years. She retired in 1996 at 73 years old with 33 years of Civil Service. Pwee remained active in the community earning Emeritus status as a Volunteer at the King Center for the Performing Arts. She loved music, dancing and the arts. She made a special effort to always volunteer at the shows that she knew her grandchildren would be attending through various school programs.
Pwee passed peacefully in the early morning of February 26, 2016 having joyfully celebrated her 91st birthday surrounded by all of her children, grandchildren and close friends.
