May 15, 1938 – March 23, 2026
Efren Hoyos—a proud Marine, dedicated community advocate, and beloved patriarch—passed away peacefully at the age of 87. Known affectionately as “Pin” in his youth and “Pete” to his many friends and fellow veterans, Efren lived a life defined by service, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to his family.
A Life of Service and Journey
Born on May 15, 1938, in Caguas, Puerto Rico, Efren was the son of Victor Hoyos and Maria Carrasquillo. Following the early loss of his mother, he was raised by his paternal grandmother, with whom he shared an exceptionally close bond. He was later raised by his father and stepmother, Isabel Hoyos.
In 1955, Efren enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Trained as an airplane mechanic, he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and the Philippines, serving in the Reserves until 1961. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal, carrying the "Semper Fi" spirit throughout his life.
After his military service, Efren returned to Brooklyn, New York, where he attended auto mechanic training school. He spent years working in several neighborhood mechanic shops throughout the borough. His technical mastery was so well-known that he became recognized by the New York City cab drivers as the “Timing Chain King of Brooklyn.” He eventually settled in Brevard County, Florida, where he continued his legacy of hard work.
Community and Recognition
In his later years, Efren became a pillar of the veteran community in Florida. As a dedicated member of the Spanish American Veterans Association, he served with distinction as the Sergeant of Arms. His presence was a staple at countless parades, ceremonies, and special events. His tireless dedication was officially recognized with the Lifetime Commitment to Service Award, honoring a man who never stopped showing up for his fellow veterans.
Family and Legacy
Efren was preceded in death by his father, Victor; his mother, Maria; his stepmother, Isabel; his brother, Hector; and his two sons, Jose and Efren Jr. (aka “Junny”). His legacy is carried forward by his devoted partner of over forty years, Roz Mestre, with whom he shared his life and heart since 1984. He is also survived by three sisters, a son and five daughters; and a vibrant lineage of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
