Ivy May Reid, 92, passed away on November 12, 2018 at her home, 3670 Carriage Gate Dr, West Melbourne, Florida. She was born on March 16, 1926 in Bermaddy in the Parrish of St. Catherine, Jamaica, West Indies, the daughter of Lovell Reid and Miranda Crosbourne. She went thru the general nursing training at Spanish Town and Kingston Public Hospitals graduating in January 1949, and upon graduating was employed in her chosen field. Ivy has often said she knew she wanted to be a nurse from she was six years old and has never deviated from that course.
Ivy left Jamaica and immigrated to Toronto, Canada on October 25, 1958 then to New York, USA. During her life she has worked in many areas of nursing, taking care of individual patients, on wards in hospital, as an operating room nurse, finally with the New York City Department of Public Health. At the Department of Public Health, she had been a school nurse all the way to becoming a supervisor in many of the city’s health centers. During that time, she went back to school to earn a BSN from Hunter College of the City University of New York.
She was a woman of faith and a member of the United Methodist Church. She had always been active in all church events and had been a member of many of their committees as well as represented her church community at conferences and assemblies. Ivy was a giving and helpful person, who always opened her door to any in need. She will be remembered by all as a caring, loving individual, who would listen and give direction to anyone for an appropriate solution for problems.
She is survived by her son, Donovan Saint Hugh Watson, his spouse, Robin Lee Watson, grandson Donovan Saint Hugh Watson Jr, his spouse, Khalilah, granddaughter Miranda Watson, her partner Marion Lott Jr, step-grandchildren, Charity Hershberger, Zachariah Haga (Leslie) and Cory Haga, great grandchildren, Jamal, Tavarus, Jayshonta, Da’Won, Malik, Imani, Mirionna, Marion III, Meila, step great-grandchildren, Bryce and Mak Putt, Shayna Lake, Tori Haga, Sophie Haga, Isaac Haga, great-great grandchildren Jay’Shon, Jada and step great great-grandchildren, Navaya, Ariella, Levi and Julian. Jacqui Townsend was her close friend and dedicated primary caregiver for the last years of her life.
The funeral service will be held on November 19, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 2800 West Eau Galle Blvd, Melbourne FL. The viewing/visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to the time of service. A Memorial Service will be held at a future date and location to be determined, notification will be sent.
Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to any Alzheimer Foundation.
