I served with Jim on the U.S.S. Oldendorf (DD-972). To me, he was what a Chief Petty Officer should have been. He was a great technician, a mature leader, and a great friend. He always had patience for younger sailors like myself. I consider knowing him a privilege. I'll miss him.

This news came to me as a great shock and an even greater loss of a great Chief and man. Chief was always an inspiration and mentor to everyone aboard the Oly. You had to only meet him once to know you were in the presence of a wonderful person. CIC was a better place because if his presence. You will be missed Chief. My prayers and condolences to all who are mourning the loss of a father, husband, uncle, brother, friend and Chief.

I am sorry to hear this. Jim was an excellent mentor aboard Oly, even for those, such as I, that did not work directly for him. I truly appreciated his input/advice during "rough seas". You will be missed Chief. - lildoc
