Margarita Long Carr was born on June 10, 1931 in Maracaibo, Venezuela. She was the fourth of seven children and was born to Edith Miller Lacroix and Julian Lacroix. At the age of three she was sent to Trinidad to live with her grandparents, Alberta and Alfred Miller.
At the age of nine, her grandfather passed away. She stepped up and helped her grandmother care for five other young children; she did so with care in her heart. She grew up going to church every week and praying every day.
At the age of 17, she married Wilfred Long and began their beautiful family. She birthed seven children: Steven, Felicia, Anthony, Catherine, Aqui, Peter, and David. Wilfred Long passed away at a young age. Margarita persevered. She taught each of her children to love without prejudice, and to live an honest life.
In October of 1967, at the age of 38, Margarita decided to migrate to America. She resided in Cape Cod, Massachusetts for two years. She was sponsored by a couple she cleaned for. When it was her time to move on with life, the couple expressed what an honest woman she was, how much they appreciated her, and how much she will be missed. Margarita was honored.
In 1970, Margarita moved to New York City and resided with her son, Anthony on West 162nd Street in Manhattan. Two years later the memories on “Washington Terrace” began. She went on to work as a nurses assistant for the next 28 years at the DeWitt nursing home. She took pride in being able to serve others and was honored to be recognized as a hard-working and dedicated woman.
In 1996 she retired and moved to Palm Bay, Florida. Soon after, she married her loving husband, Lewis F. Carr. Together they helped raise and love a generation of great grandchildren. The house she built became a home the moment she stepped foot through the doorway. She was always welcoming to anyone who wanted to spend a moment or a few nights. She filled her home with laughter, good home-cooked meals, and an atmosphere full of love.
Margarita knew how to make and take a good joke. She was always laughing when surrounded by love, family, and friends.
She created, and was a part of so many of our good memories. Margarita lived a good full life. She loved God, her family, traveling, her garden, cooking and feeding everyone. No one ever left her house, hungry or without being offered a home-cooked meal.
Margarita was the matriarch of the family. All of Margarita’s years of life taught her to be patient, kind, loving, giving, and a good leader. She did her best to instill those things in each one of us. Margarita’s legacy is right here, in this room, in all of us! She demonstrated how to work hard, enjoy life, love each other and put God first.
Margarita has had a positive impact on so many lives. She left behind 7 children, 14 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren and many extended family and friends. We can keep our memories in our hearts forever and there Margarita can live on.
Nothing loved is ever truly lost and Margarita was loved so very much.
