Ruth Coral (Burbank) Mitchel was born on April 13, 1921 to Frank and Hazel (Whitenburt) Burbank. Ruth recalled many happy memories of her childhood in Rocky River, Ohio, on the banks of Lake Erie. She enjoyed swimming, fishing, and skating with her parents and siblings, and admitted to being very athletic in sports.
Ruth attributed her robust health to a diet of homegrown garden fruits and vegetables and her mothers' wonderful cooking. The family owned one vehicle which her father used to travel to work. Consequently, Ruth relied on daily walking and taking public transportation to go to work as a bookkeeper and accountant at the American Greetings Company, a position she held until her retirement.
Ruth married John Mitchel, who was a widow with four small boys, and she helped to rear the children with great enthusiasm. She moved to Florida and lived in Merritt Island for many years along with Jack, her widowed mother and her sister Grace.
After becoming a widow herself, Ruth met and fell in love with the late Henry Pitt, her soul mate for over 35 years. They traveled the country and created many fond memories.
At 97 years of age, Ruth remained the cheerful, generous person she was always known to be. She enjoyed reading, writing and reciting poetry, and could sing out many songs of the past.
Ruth was the last of eight siblings and leaves nephews and nieces in Ohio, including Jane Hahn and her husband, Bob, and their family.
