Walt and I spent years working on our RV-10s. The reason mine is flying is due to the help I got from him along the way.  
The one regret I have is that I didn't get a chance to take him for a ride in mine before he passed.  He was a good friend and always will be.  Walt takes his place with all the other angels sitting on my shoulders.  They are the ones that have kept me safe during my flying years.  I'll miss you Walt!


Walter was a strong personality who intimidated me when I first met him. But as we worked together over the years I saw someone who had a warrior's demeanor hiding a good and loving heart. He will be missed. God grant him peace.

Walter was one of the nicest guys I've ever had pleasure to worked with, my condolences to the Hewett family; may his sole forever rest in peace.

Becoming a colleague and friend when Walt took on a Manufacturing Electrical Engineering (MEE) role with then Rockwell Collins, his practical experience well mentored as we worked complex radio system topics.  Walt's humor, constant positivity, understanding of the human condition and ways of fostering collaboration continue to inspire.

In the early '90s, spending time with Walt and Betty, whether it was hitting the restaurants or flying around Iowa in a 1958 Piper Tri-Pacer we co-owned with colleague Fred Zehr, were some of the great times of my life.

I worked with Walter for nine years at Collins.  He was a great friend and a joy to work with.  He and I shared an intrest in flying, both of us enjoyed sharing flying stories.   I will miss visiting him at the hanger and watching him work on his plane.

I worked with Walter at Collins and he helped me in my career and taught me life skills. Walter shared  many stories in which I have the pleasure of hearing. He always brought me joy when hearing them. He will be missed, but his stories stay alive in our hearts. I am so saddened by this and Betty anything we can do, we are here.

I am so sorry for your loss.  I knew Walt a lot of years and enjoyed his stories.  He will be missed.  

Walter was the "dad" of the Valkaria Airport family.  I met Walter when I came to work for the Airport and I have so many wonderful memories of him.

There are three things that I will always remember about Walter because they made such an impact on my life.
First, his laugh.  Walter had a laugh like no one else and to hear him laugh made everyone around him laugh.  Almost everyone knows that Walter was very slowly building an RV-10 with his friend of 37 years, Howard Tetrault.  If you went by their hangar on any given day and asked when they expected the airplane to be finished, Walter would always say: "Tuesday."  
The second thing I will always remember is Walter's spirit of giving.  He would walk away from his own project to help any other aviator on the airport with an issue they were experiencing with their own aircraft, and everyone knew Walter would have the answer to the problem.
Lastly, Walter introduced me to the kindest man in the world, and my partner, Howard.  
I will be forever grateful that I had the privilege of calling Walter my friend.
 The Valkaria Airport family will not be the same without Walter.  He will be missed by us all. 


I am really sadden about this news. Walter was quite a character. I always remember him for all the stories about the airplane he built. That was his toy, his entertainment. It meant a lot to him. He also shared many stories about the work place and how things could better be improved.  He was never shy to express what he truly loved and was passionate about: "Avionics" and he shared his knowledge with many of us. Walter will be missed by many of us.  May he rest in Peace.

My condolences to everyone in the family, I am very sad to hear of this news.  I worked with Walt at Rockwell Collins for a few years and thoroughly enjoyed making use of his "walking encyclopedia" nature with most anything technical, especially electronics.  We shared many interesting stories about life's adventures, and some out of office projects that kept either of us out of trouble.  His re-build of the O-540 aircraft engine, with all the pics on his phone,  amazed me, there aren't many folks that would tackle that one on their own!  Walt was a terrific consultant on the issues that came up with our work on avionics circuit and test issues, he always came through just perfect.  I will sure miss him..... God Bless all of you.

Walter was my mentor when I hired in at Collins. A super intelligent man. His knowledge was amazing. Walter went out of his way to teach me the ropes and get me going in the right direction. The "Walter Principle" was the greatest advice I ever received in my entire career in Engineering.  He was just a one a kind guy who will be greatly missed. Saddens me greatly to hear this news. 


Heyyy Grandpa, what I would give to hop in your truck with you and head to the airport. But first stop, McDonald’s breakfast sandwiches and coffee.  Grandpa, i will miss that sweet southern voice of yours, that one of a kind sense of humor when telling something funny to us. Don’t worry, I’ll be sure to give missy a run with her Pikachu. Grandpa, I love you so much!! Thank you for the best childhood and continued guidance as we became adults. I will cherish our memories for a life time. What a beautiful marriage you and grandma had, 50 years and a family of generations to continue in your legacy.  We will be here for grandma. You are missed greatly. Until I see you again, Take flight!
