MRS. WINNIFRED ELVIRA CHAMBERS was born on October 28, 1942 in Belmont, Westmoreland Jamaica. She was the fourth child of twelve children, and daughter of Olive Ruby Scott and Cecile Roxborough. Winnifred grew up in the town of Westmoreland with her eleven siblings and it wasn’t before long she decided to move to Kingston, Jamaica with her older sister Doreen. In her early twenties she then fell in love and soon married Cornel Silvera Chambers. Shortly thereafter she started her family of three boys Oral, Cornel and Samuel. Several years later after moving to the United States the youngest son, Donald, was born.
The decision to leave Jamaica was not only for a better future for her immediate family but her entire extended family as well. Taking a small leap of faith she moved to the city of Baltimore, MD. with dreams of success and a better life for her family.
Winnifred took on a variety of jobs; from babysitting to becoming a realtor to later opening a Jamaican restaurant in West Baltimore. After a long year of hard work she was able to send for her family. She continued to work hard, but it wasn’t until she became a contractor for The Maryland Lacrosse Company STX, that she was able to enjoy the fruits of her labor and help those she once left behind. This included her mother, siblings, and friends which led to the migration of the family to the USA.
Winnifred ensured upon arrival there was housing and jobs waiting for those who were of age to work. She became the rock, the core and the backbone of the family. She was respected and could be counted to always lend a helping hand. Everyone would run to her for advice regardless of their problems and she could stop family disputes with her inner voice. As the family grew the problems grew as well but, there wasn’t anything that Winnifred couldn’t handle. She was there for every event such as; the births of her many grandchildren, graduations, promotional ceremonies, birthdays and holidays. In which, everyone knew to meet at her house for every occasion. Using her skills in the kitchen she would welcome you to her home with plenty of food, love and open arms.
