Mrs Duffy was my 9th grade elementary algebra teacher at Palmdale High School. I was not very studious and had no interest in the subject. Every day Mrs Duffy would call me to the chalkboard to work out one of the homework assignment problems. I would try to "fake" my way through it, perpetually coming up with the wrong answer as well as the wrong approach. Always dismissing me with disappointment in her voice, only to call on me the next day resulting in the same outcome. Feeling humiliated, I sought help from my father with my algebra homework and after several successful trips to the board , she stopped "harassing" me and started calling on the next line of "slackers". Many years later, during both my undergraduate and professional studies I recognized what a great educator she was. Most other teachers would have called on their "pet" or more motivated students and spare themselves the frustrations of dealing with under appreciating students such as myself. But Helen was a true teacher who never dismissed any of her students potential. Helen and Pat later became patients of mine in my dental practice and we become very good friends. I had once told her of my experiences in her class and she was moved to tears. Both Helen and Pat were teachers who were truly devoted to all of their children and will be missed by all but especially me.

I was just thinking of Mrs. Duffy today by coincidence, remembering how she was one of those once-in-a-lifetime teachers who I was lucky to have at Palmdale High School. This was roughly 35 years ago, but I thought I would try to see if I could find her online to let her know that she had such a big impact on me. I was so saddened to see that I missed her by only weeks. I wish I could have let her know how important she was to me, even if it was so long ago, and how much I got out of that class. I'm helping my son with Algebra now, and I'm still able to remember a quadratic equation because of her. Thank you, Mrs. Duffy. :)

Helen was our frined for many years and my colleague at PHS for 29 years. We both were Math teachers and our rooms were next to each other....mine 241 and Helen's 242. We were under the understanding that her birthday was the same as my Dad's which was March 10th! It is interesting that she never corrected us on the day of her birthday. I had intended to call Helen on her 94th birthday which is just a few days off so this is very disappointing to hear that she has passed away. We have kept in touch with each other for the last 25 years or more and will miss her notes in the mail. The last that I corresponded was a lengthy Christmas letter that we sent to her. The last time we saw Helen was 5 years ago or more when she took us to lunch at the Olive Garden. We greeted her with a bouquet flowers, had a good lunch together, and an enjoyable visit. She was concerned whether she would get her drivers license renewed or not. But she did! We will miss you Helen. May you rest in peace with your Patrick.
