SHAW, Albert S. Jr., of Newtown Square, PA, died peacefully of Parkinson's Disease at Canterbury, the White Horse Village Skilled Nursing Facility, on August 27, 2015, at the age of 87.
A longtime resident of Newtown Square, he was a graduate of Yeadon High School, where he played basketball and baseball. In 1950, he was graduated from The University of Pennsylvania where he managed the basketball team and was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. Following his undergraduate studies, he entered the University of Pennsylvania Law School. In the fall of his first year of law school he was called into the Army as a second lieutenant and served during the Korean War. He re-entered Penn Law School after his discharge from the Army where he was Law Review and a member of the Sharswood Club. Upon graduation, he joined the firm of Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads, where he became a partner and worked as a litigation attorney for over 40 years. He was a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association and at one point was the Secretary.
A longtime resident of Newtown Square, he was Chairman of the Newtown Square Planning Commission when ARCO purchased and developed the Ellis School Property. He worked closely with ARCO in order to ensure land preservation and restoration of the historic Newtown Tavern on the corner of Goshen Road and Route 252.
An active member of Waynesborough Country Club for forty-five years, he served as Tennis Chairman and then as a member of the Board of Governors for two terms, the last term as Secretary.
Flying small aircraft was his passion. He flew and owned single-engine airplanes. He and his wife traveled all over the country, including trips from Philadelphia to California, several trips to the Bahamas, up and down the East Coast, and Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. Shortly after his retirement from practicing law he became a flight coordinator for Angel Flight East, a charitable organization consisting of private pilots who donate flights in their aircraft to patients and their families who, due to financial or geographic constraints, need assistance with transport to medical facilities for diagnosis or treatment. He was also a faithful Phillies and Eagles fan and an avid reader with a particular interest in Civil War history.
He is survived by his loving family: wife Helen, nee McCafferty; beloved daughter Jennifer S. Stearns, M.D. and son-in-law Duncan Scott Stearns, M.D. of Cleveland, Ohio; and brother John H. Shaw and his wife Lorraine of Cape May Point, New Jersey. He was "Big Dada" to two grandchildren, Aidan and Chloe Stearns.
