
Born August 7, 1929 in Poplarville, MS to Vivien (Missy) Gredell and Earl Lutz. Throughout her life, she lived in Montgomery, AL, New Orleans, LA, Brielle, NJ, Devon, PA, Signal Mountain, TN, and Jackson, MS before finishing her years in Louisville, KY. She is a graduate of the University of Alabama where she earned her bachelor’s degree in physics as well as a master’s degree in mathematics. She was a beloved member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. During her career, she focused on software development. She assisted in the development of e-mail at Bell Labs, worked on Department of Defense supercomputer research at Unisys, and taught in the computer science department at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Ann truly enjoyed the sea and all that it had to offer including sailing, lighthouses, and seafood. She was passionate about learning and exploring new places, regardless if it was down the block or across the ocean. She volunteered her time when possible and was very interested in ancestry.
Ann is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Shirtz, her son, Jeffrey Shirtz, and grandson, Christopher. She is survived by her sister Vivien Harmon (Jim) of Birmingham, AL, three of her four children: Vivien Shirtz Jacoby (Jon) of Louisville, KY, Raymond Shirtz Jr. (Diane) of Boston, MA, and Joseph Shirtz (Cassie) of Mendham, NJ, nine grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.
Services will be held September 25, 2021, at 11:00 am in The Church of St. Monica, 63 Main Avenue, Berwyn, PA 19312. A visitation will be held before the services at 10:00 am at the church. Private burial will be held in the Calvary Cemetery, Conshohocken, PA. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Girls Who Code at https://girlswhocode.com.
