Chuck is the son of the late T. William and Laura Palmer Benedict. He is survived by his brother, John, and wife Gerry Benedict of Massachusetts; his sister, Laurie, and husband John Morris of North Carolina, and also by the late Ted Benedict’s widow, Marjorie, of Florida; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Chuck was fortunate to have been welcomed by Nancy’s family who enriched his life immeasurably: namely, Nancy’s children: Ann Kimble and her husband, Mike; W. Joseph Monnich, and the late Nicholas Edward Monnich. Chuck is also survived by six beloved grandchildren. Additional members of Chuck’s family are Nancy’s brother Dan Young and sister Amy Lambert and close family friend, Jesse Justus.
Chuck was born in Norwalk, Connecticut in 1946. He graduated from New Canaan High School in 1964 and Dartmouth College in 1968. He received a Master’s Degree in Physics from Princeton University and a Master’s Degree in Neuroscience from Duke University. In 1979, he graduated from medical school at the University of Connecticut.
After a neurology residency at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, he was hired by Beloit Memorial Hospital in Beloit, Wisconsin where he practiced medicine for over 20 years.
In retirement, he was recruited to run for the Wisconsin State Assembly and served three terms from 2005 to 2010. Throughout his career, he championed public health.
In 2003, he met the love of his life, Nancy Monnich, who was Vice-President for Enrollment at Beloit College. They got their partnership off to an impressive start when she agreed to join him on a Scientific American trip to Antarctica where one of his forebears, Nathanial Brown Palmer, had been an early explorer.
After 12 years together in Wisconsin, they moved to the Philadelphia area to be closer to family and made many wonderful friends in the Villages at Hillview and Shannondell.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the end of November. Contributions in Chuck’s memory may be made to your local PBS or NPR station.
