Evelyn Garnett McGann (Evie) passed away peacefully at age 84 on February 12, 2018 with her family by her side. Evie is the daughter of the late Percy Eugene Garnett and the late Claire von Steinbrun Garnett of Drexel Hill, PA. She is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, Thomas H. McGann (Bert).
Evie was a graduate of Upper Darby High School, Class of 51 and attended both Wesley College, Dover, DE and Harcum College, Rosemont, PA. In 1954 she married Bert and life took them to Army posts in El Paso, Texas and Menomie Falls, Wisconsin before setting up a home and starting their family first in King of Prussia and ultimately Berwyn, PA. Together with Bert, she raised five strong daughters: Debbie Heaton (Clay) of Middletown, DE; Lois Redmond (Mark) of Bryn Mawr, PA; Audrey Corrigan (Jeffrey) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Nancy Foreman (David) of Malvern, PA; and Laura Leyden (Jerry) of Malvern PA. She has eight grandchildren: Danny Redmond, Kelsey Foreman, Ellie Corrigan, Tom Redmond, Katie Foreman, Lauren Corrigan, Allison Leyden, and Jason Leyden and one grand dog Blue Corrigan.
Evie was very involved during her daughters’ school years and supporting their many interests and activities from Girl Scouts and ballet to gymnastics and kick line. She volunteered at the T/E schools for over 20 years, working in the main office at Conestoga, volunteering for the PTO and Interschool Council, and making band hoagies with Dr. Kiehner in the middle of the night. Evie was an advocate for a strong education for all children. In 2004, she was bestowed the 25 year Achievement Award from Southeastern American Cancer Society, for volunteering to end the fight against cancer, a disease that took her mother when she was 17. Her dedication to St. David’s was unmistakable throughout her years of service, which included Fair Flea Market volunteer, Quilt making committee, and official tour guide for the Old Church. Her hobbies included US history, bridge club, sewing, reading, and travel. She and Bert enjoyed exploring Europe, South America and the Caribbean, but came home to enjoy the Poconos and Ocean City, NJ with their family.
The McGann family would like to extend their appreciation to The Wayne Center for their great care and compassion during her final days.
