On April 10th, 2021, after a brief illness, Frederick J. Boehlke Jr, age 95 years old, concluded his earthly life at The Wayne Center in Wayne. Born in Philadelphia in 1926, Mr. Boehlke lived most of his long and productive life in the city and then later in Paoli. He graduated from Central High School (1944), from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (1952), and in 1955 he received the Ph. D. degree in history from the University of Pennsylvania. During the period of his studies, Mr. Boehlke worked at the Federal Reserve Bank in Philadelphia.
From 1955 to 1967 Mr. Boehlke served as professor of history at Judson College in Marion, Alabama. He 1967 he moved to the Main Line area and began his long career as a very popular professor of history at Eastern University in St. Davids. He retired from teaching in 2010, but still worked part-time as the university’s archivist and historian until 2017. He resided in Paoli for almost 50 years.
A deeply religious Christian, Mr. Boehlke was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and later Paoli Baptist Church, serving as deacon, adult Sunday School teacher, secretary. He served the PA/NJ district of the Southern Baptist Convention as historian for many years. An avid traveler, Mr. Boehlke made numerous trips domestically and abroad, taking scores of photographs and creating detailed travelogues to the delight of his many students, colleagues, friends, neighbors.
Mr. Boehlke is fondly remembered for his encyclopedic memory, story-telling, humor and generosity. He was the only son of Frederick John Boehlke Sr. and Freda Riess Boehlke, and is survived by cousins, William Riess, and Rebecca Riess Miller.
