Frederick J. Schachinger
August 3, 1926 – January 8, 2021
Frederick Joseph Schachinger, 94, of Wayne, PA, peacefully passed away on January 8, 2021 surrounded by loved ones. He was the loving and caring husband of Mary (Downs) Schachinger for 49 years.
Fred was born on August 3, 1926, in New York City, the second of four children of Fred and Clara Schachinger, both of whom were immigrants from Germany in the years surrounding World War I. He joined the Navy after graduating from high school, where he was enlisted in the V-12 program, and attended Brown University, where he graduated in 1945, before being called into active duty. Upon honorable discharge from the Navy, Fred worked for Sears, Roebuck and Co., in New York City, where he met his first wife, Winifred, a Scottish immigrant. They were married in 1950, moved to Atlanta shortly thereafter, and had four daughters. In 1968, Sears transferred Fred back to their headquarters in New York City, and the family moved to New Jersey. In 1969, Winifred passed away at the age of 41. In 1971, Fred met Mary, and they married. The following year, they had a son. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Chicago, where Fred worked in the Sears Tower.
After 35 years with Sears, Fred retired in 1984, and he and Mary moved back east to Wayne, PA where he spent his final years. They both enjoyed time spent with their family, in the community, and as devoted members of St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church.
As an avid outdoorsman, Fred enjoyed sailing, hiking, fishing, and snowmobiling. He spent countless hours building, repairing and tinkering, teaching his children the basics as they worked beside him.
Fred is survived by his wife Mary, his children; Lindsay Schachinger, Kathi (Mac) Mestayer, Chris Reedal, Elizabeth (Stephen) Bartlett, and Frederick (Sarah) Schachinger, Jr.; ten grandchildren, David Paxson, Leah Paxson, Kristin Reedal, John Reedal, Sarah Hirsch, Emily Hirsch, Regina Schachinger, Frederick Schachinger III, Eloise Schachinger, and William Schachinger. He is also survived by his loving sister, Carol Schachinger, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Clara (Ulmer) Schachinger, his sisters, Mildred Schachinger, and Claire (Harold) Krause.
