It is with great sadness that the family of George P. Goemans Jr. announces his passing peacefully on Thursday, February 7, 2019, at the age of 85. George will be lovingly remembered by his wife of almost 60 years, Alice, and his children, Scott and his wife Kathy, Kimberly and her husband Angus Grant, and Craig and his wife Jodi. “Pop Pop" will be greatly missed by his four grandchildren, Max, Lizzie, Caroline, and Gillian. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Oliver. George was predeceased by his brothers Robert C. Goemans and James H. Coerper, his in-laws Frederick and Patricia Landmann, and his granddaughter Sydney H. Grant.
Born July 3, 1933 in Appleton, Wisconsin, he was the son of George Peter Goemans Sr. and Florence Collman Goemans. After graduation from Appleton High School in 1951 he attended The University of Wisconsin and was awarded a partial scholarship as a varsity wrestler. He graduated from the University in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Labor Relations and Economics. After postgraduate study at the University of Texas, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in Germany during the Cold War, where he met his future brother-in-law, Fred Landmann.
After serving his country, George began working for the YMCA and continued his education at Temple University where he received a Master of Education degree with an emphasis on organizing community activities. A career change led George to executive sales positions in the medical supply field beginning with American Hospital Supply and concluding with his retirement in 1997 from the Absorbent Cotton Company, where he was part owner.
George had many lifelong interests: reading, bridge, chess, poker, travel, fantasy football, shopping for bargains, and spending time with family. He enjoyed golf, tennis, handball, swimming, and basketball, and was a member of numerous clubs including the New York Athletic Club, Los Angeles Athletic Club, Aronimink Golf Club, La Cañada Country Club, A.C. Neilson Tennis Center, Overbrook Golf Club and YMCAs from coast to coast. George was a practical joker with a big heart. His philosophy on his last resume reads, “Never stop trying to learn, always search for new ideas.”
