She was a long time resident of Tinicum Township, Delaware County. Dolly was born on April 14, 1927 in Ridley Park, PA to parents Amos "Hank" Horne, Jr. and Violet Horne nee Surplus. She left Eddystone High School her senior year to help the war effort by going to work at Sun Oil in Marcus Hook. Following WW2, she met and married Charles Gray in 1946 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Essington, where she later served as a Sunday School teacher. She was a homemaker to her husband and children. In 1993 she moved to Ormond Beach, FL after her husband retired, and choose to remain there with her friends following his death in 2004. As her health failed, she moved to an Assisted Living Facility at Wilmington in 2020 to be closer to her family only to have her in-person visits cut short by the Covid 19 outbreak. But she outlived the pandemic.
As a young adult she enjoyed roller skating and entertaining with her slide guitar and piano. She also was a volunteer with the scout organization. Dolly loved playing cards and board games with her family and friends especially a good game of Bingo. Most importantly Dolly enjoyed making people laugh even at her own expense, and she would tell us that it doesn't cost a thing to smile.
Dolly was preceded in death by her brother Amos "Bud" Horne III. She is survived by her children Charles Gray, Jr (Louise) and Susan Emmons (Robert); her grandchildren Jason and Scott Gray; and, Allison and Brian Emmons. Dolly is also survived by 10 Great-grandchildren.
A private visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at 10:00 A.M. at Alleva Funeral Home, located at 1724 E. Lancaster Ave., Paoli, PA, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 A.M. She will be interred at a later date with her husband at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL.
