Lois Carol Walker was born to Edward Francis Hubbard and Clara Ford Hubbard in July of 1942. Her father was a hardworking man who rose to prominence in the city of Philadelphia where he eventually ran the Philadelphia Gas Works. Her mother was a homemaker, an avid gardener and a creative cook. As a child Lois and her younger brother, Edward Hubbard Jr grew up in Upper Darby, Pilgrim Gardens and Oakmont, PA.
The family spent summers waterskiing and crabbing at their summer home in Rehoboth Beach, DE. Lois was an excellent and graceful waterskier, frequently launching from the dock on a slalom ski, sometimes even while holding her baby on her hip!
The Hubbards also spent a lot of time at Lois’s grandfather’s home in Upper Fairmount, MD. where they crabbed and practiced target shooting.
Lois and her brother, Edward Hubbard Jr. both went to Haverford Junior and Senior High. During her junior year Lois married Bruce Thompson and they had a daughter, Carol. Sadly, the marriage was short lived.
After high school Lois attended nursing school at Philadelphia General Hospital, a city charity hospital. For a sheltered young girl from the suburbs it was an eye opening experience in many ways. That period was a source of many fond memories for the rest of her life. While at PGH Lois earned her degree as a Registered Nurse. Nursing was a career where she excelled, earning praise and accolades from employers all throughout her career.
In 1968 Lois married Randy Walker and in a few years the family moved to Leominster, Massachusetts. Lois continued nursing and Randy worked as a salesman. After eight years they divorced and Lois continued her life in Massachusetts as a nurse and a single mother.
In 1998 Lois met a fellow nurse named Shirley Hill and almost immediately they were inseparable. They spent the next ten years side by side until Shirley succumbed to leukemia. During their time together they pursued lots of adventures including making stained glass game boards and sculptures, traveling in their motorhome and owning a sunglasses store on the beach in Ogunquit, ME. Lois loved nothing better than listening to Shirley sing and play guitar. Shirley was her soulmate and the love of her life.
Throughout all of her adult life Lois faced a daunting struggle with drugs and alcohol. She fought these addictions with twelve step programs and meetings and counseling. She was finally able to beat those demons, spending the last 20+ years of her life clean and sober.
Lois was well loved by her coworkers and they missed her dearly when she retired, They would often stop by to take her to grab breakfast or lunch at a local coffee shop. Lois also spent lots of time with her wonderful neighbors cooking out and playing cribbage.
The last few years of her life Lois spent living quietly at home with her constant companion, her dog Blue.
Lois Walker is survived by her daughter, Carol Walker, son in law, Pete Setian, her brother Edward Hubbard Jr., her sister in law, Joan Marie Hubbard, her niece, Kimberly Hubbard, her nephew, Tony Hubbard, and her great nephew, Conor Hubbard.
