Louis Di Gianni, born Luigi Di Giannantonio in Colledimacine, Chieti Italy died peacefully at home surrounded by his beloved only daughter Loredana DiGiannantonio and her husband Rafael Astillero on July 14, 2023. He was 94. Along with his daughter, Louis is survived by granddaughters Andria (Thomas, Jr.) Cook, Erica (Philip) Mabee, and seven great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, nieces, nephews, and cousins residing in Italy, France, Canada and the United States. From his second marriage to the late Miria D'Amico DiGianni, he leaves behind step-granddaughters and step-great grandchildren.
The oldest of four children born to Pietro DiGiannantonio and Maria Pacenza, Louis was a master tailor who began his career as an apprentice at age 12 and worked at the profession he loved until April 8, 2023. At age 18 he joined the Italian Navy and served honorably for three years. In the early 1960s he moved to Bochum, Germany as jobs were scarce in Italy. One of his brothers-in-law convinced Louis that more job opportunities were to be found in the United States, and so Louis moved his little family to the United States in August of 1967. He worked for Jacob Reed and Sons fabricating military uniforms. Each year he was sent to different military academies, most often, the United States Naval Academy in Maryland and the Citadel Military College in North Carolina to fit the incoming students for their uniforms.
A hard worker all his life, he never retired, instead beginning in 1980, along with his regular full-time job fabricating military uniforms, he worked part time in the evenings at Cappelli Tailors in Wayne, PA. Once the military company closed in 1983, he began working at Cappelli Tailors full time and did so until April 8, 2023.
The last months of his life brought him to live with his daughter in Florida. Within just a week of the move he became fast friends with many of the neighbors in the community, joining in on outings with his favorite being the men’s breakfast at Pop’s Sunset Grill. He would tell new and old friends alike, “I have moved to paradise and finally have peace.” He loved going to the jetty and watching the dolphins and manatees swim by. His favorite pass time was to watch Italian soccer and cheer on his favorite team – Milano. He also loved playing “scopa” with both his daughter and son-in-law and made sure to win each game.
Louis will be dearly missed by many, but we all take comfort in knowing that he lived a long life and that his last months on earth were spent surrounded by love.
