He passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by all his children. A humble man by nature, yet he spoke with great pride of his family, both immediate and extended...it was the gift in his life for which he was most grateful. He remarked to many people who visited him in his last days, “I really don’t know anyone who’s had it as good as I have”.
Lou and Gerri were parents to seven children: Celeste (Vince) Paolizzi; Mike (Eileen); Steph (John) Palumbo; Cindy (John) Gilroy; Chrissy (Christian) Bennett; Jerry (Tara); and Tommy (Gina). They found their greatest joy in their later years doting on their nineteen grandchildren: Megan, Michael, Abbey, Vinnie, Nick, Sam, Sophie, Cassie, Jamey, Katie, Aidan, Eileen, Ainslee, Xavier, Sonia, Jackson, Gus, Lia and Luca. Lou is also survived by two sisters: Mary Piombino and Liz Tenaglio; he was predeceased by his brother Pat and his sister Evelyn Morelli, and their parents, Louis, Sr. and Antoinette Piombino.
Lou was born in Strafford and attended Strafford Elementary School and Tredyffrin/Easttown High School; he earned a BS in Business from Villanova University and remained a loyal Villanova basketball fan for his whole life; he added all things Penn State to his college sports repertoire, as four of his children and five of his grandchildren (so far) graduated from PSU.
Lou’s first career was in the restaurant business, helping run his family’s restaurant, The Old Lamp Post Inn, in Strafford. After retiring from that life to help raise his growing family, he created a second career for himself in real estate, working as both a broker and an appraiser.
Other than the time he spent in his twenties serving in the PA Army National Guard, and then in the US Army – a part of his life that he was strongly connected to – he spent his days from childhood right up until his passing, living in the Berwyn/Devon/Strafford area. He was a devoted member of St. Norbert parish in Paoli during the many years his children attended the school, and he remained active there for many years after, serving as a Eucharistic minister and in the Knights of Columbus, until his heart finally brought him back home to Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Strafford.
Lou was a founding member of the TE/Conestoga Old Timers Club, and was inducted into the TE/Conestoga Football Hall of Fame; he was an active member of the Lions Club; the Knights of Columbus; ProLife; and the Men of Malvern, where he planned and attended an annual Easter weekend retreat for more than 300 men over more than 50 years.
Lou had an unshakable faith that carried him through even the most challenging of times, and inspired those around him to simply trust that God has a plan and that is the right one. He was a friend to many, and he kept most every friend he ever made. He was genuinely invested in their lives and in their stories; he left an indelible mark on all those who were lucky enough to know him.
Friends and family are invited to gather with us in celebration of Lou’s life. Visitation will be on Wednesday, 12/29, from 5:00pm- 9:00pm at Alleva Funeral Home, Inc. 1724 E. Lancaster Ave. Paoli. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, 12/30, at 10:00am at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Strafford. In lieu of flowers, Dad would be honored to have donations made in his memory to: Amigos de Jesus, PO Box 476, Malvern, PA 19355-9998; www.amigosdejesus.org.
