She was born Nov. 22, 1941, in Washington, D.C. She later moved with her military family to Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii, where she finished high school. After the family returned to the mainland, she completed her bachelor's degree in history at St. Francis University. In 1966 she received a master’s degree in modern European history from Villanova University.
Patricia started her teaching career at Triton Regional High School in New Jersey. She then became an assistant professor at Peirce College in Philadelphia, where she taught courses in the humanities as well as fashion. It was this blend of smarts and style that caught the eye of her colleague and future husband, Richard. They married in London in 1970.
Two years later, during the Cold War, the newlyweds traveled through the Soviet Union, gathering knowledge to share with her Russian history students at Neshaminy Senior High School and later Immaculata College, where she taught for twelve years while raising two sons.
After Richard died suddenly in 1995, she found new ways to support her family. She channeled her love of history into work writing for the Main Line Life, coordinating programs for the Valley Forge Historical Society, promoting the Paoli Battlefield Preservation Fund, and archiving research at Centocor.
Active in her community, she served on the St. Norbert Parish Pastoral Council, volunteered for the Immaculata Art Show, and served as publicity chair for her sons’ Boy Scout Troop Devon 50. For the many stories she wrote about the troop’s adventures, the Chester County Council recognized her with their Extraordinary Service Award.
In addition to her sons, Justin and Oliver, she is survived by three grandchildren, and her three sisters, Frances, Joanne, and Sally.
Patricia loved her family. She loved good food and nice clothes. And she loved learning. “Bury me,” she said, “with a cup of coffee, a tube of lipstick, and a copy of The New York Times.”
Friends may call at the Alleva Funeral Home, in Paoli, PA, Friday, Aug. 29, 4–7 p.m. A second visitation will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, at 10 a.m. at St. Norbert Church before a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
