René Charles Schlag

René Charles Schlag, 78, a resident of Newtown Square, PA, passed away unexpectedly on June 30, 2026. René was born on February 10, 1948 in Wheeling West Virginia, to parents, Charles John Schlag and Audrey (Zener) Schlag. He graduated from Malvern Preparatory School in 1966. He continued his education, graduating from Villanova University in 1970 with degrees in Economics and Accounting. In 1972, he graduated from Temple University with a MBA in Finance, and from Fordham University with a Juris Doctorate in 1983. René established a professional career in New York City. Starting in accounting at Arthur Anderson then moving to Marsh & McLennan Companies. Following law school, he worked for Philip Morris & Company, Philip Morris International and retired from Altria Group as International Tax Counsel. In retirement, he continued to have a private practice in accounting, tax, and estate planning.

René was well-known for his award-winning ability in track and cross country at both Malvern Prep and Villanova University. He was a voracious reader of history and finance. He relaxed by playing blues guitar and driving his 2017 Silver Corvette. He was viewed by his siblings as a pillar of support and guidance and the most loyal, honest, caring, and responsible person. René was regarded by those who knew him as always warm and gracious, someone who genuinely enjoyed being with people and made others feel welcome. He will always be remembered for his warmth, wit, humor, compassion, and remarkable intellect that touched everyone around him. René had a special way of making people feel welcome, valued, and uplifted. His friendly and sociable nature will be deeply missed.

René was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Audrey Schlag.

René is survived by his wife of 53 years Marguerite Katherine (Stuhler) Schlag, sisters Marilyn Sarno (Edward), Carol Bassett (John deceased), Karen Babb (Michael deceased), Linda Grob (Duane), Eric Schlag (Cindy), Lois Griesser (Thomas deceased), 9 nieces, 2 nephews, 12 great nephews and 2 great nieces.

A viewing is scheduled for 10:00 am on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 800 E. Lancaster Avenue, Villanova PA 19085. Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 am. Interment will be on Wednesday July 8, 2026, at 1:00 pm at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, NJ.
