Robert W. Carroll 1923-2013. Rail Executive Served in World War II

Robert W. Carroll of Radnor, Pa, formerly of Croton-on-Hudson, NY passed away on Saturday, February 9, 2013. He was a parishioner at St. Katherine of Sienna Church in Wayne. PA Mr. Carroll was an Executive of the New York Central and Penn Central Railroads for twenty three of his thirty years with those companies. He rose from steno-clerk to the office of Corporate Secretary of both entities. He served the railroads during a period of great challenge, innovation and change and participated in some of the most significant events in the history of railroading. Mr. Carroll completed his career with the the Law Firm of LaBrum and Doak in Philadelphia as Managing Director Mr. Carroll was born in Ossining, NY and raised in Croton-on-Hudson. He was the son of Catherine and John Carroll. His father was a conductor and his paternal grandfather a Crossing Watchman for the New York Central. He was destined to become a railroader. He graduated from Croton-Harmon High School and attended New York University’s (School of Commerce) evenings after World War II. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a Petty Officer First Class, during World War II and was assigned to the USS. Nemesis on anti-submarine convoy duty in the Atlantic Mr. Carroll was a member of the American Society of Corporate Secretaries; the International Association of Legal Administrators; American Bar Associate (Law Office Associates); Knights of Columbus; Friendly Sons of St. Patrick ; Veterans of Foreign War; and Overbrook Golf Club. He was listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in Railroading. He was awarded the Legion of Merit Award in 1982 by the Chapel of the four Chaplains. He was married to Mary Bernardine Dugan Carroll on June 1, 1946 at St Patrick’s Church, Verplanck, NY. Mr. & Mrs. Carroll raised five children; Kevin M. (Mary), Edison, NJ; Dennis P. (Kathe), Croton-on-Hudson, NY; Terrence J. (Susan), Conway, S.C.; Maura A. Moses, Phoenixville, PA; Monica E. (Carl) Valente, Germantown, MD. Mr. and Mrs. Carroll also had 10 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter and two grandsons On Friday evening, Feb. 15, friends may call at the Edward F Carter Funeral Home, 41 Grand Street, Croton-on-Hudson, NY. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM at Holy Name of Mary Church in Croton Saturday, February 16. Interment will follow at St. Patrick’ s Cemetery in Verplanck, NY
