He was born in Palmyra, Pennsylvania to Harold and Anna (Keller) Miller on February 24, 1933. He attended Palmyra Area High School (class of 1951), where he was captain of the football team, drove his friends around in his Model A Ford, and was nicknamed "Gus". His mother, Anna, his Aunt Mary, and his uncles raised him.
Ronald, the first in his family to attend college, obtained a football scholarship to Franklin & Marshall College, where he played tackle on the football team, ran track, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1955. F&M always held a special place in his heart and he was delighted that three of his children, and two of his grandchildren, attended the College. Upon graduation from F&M, he served in the United Stated Marine Corps, and thereafter obtained a Master of Education from Temple University in 1963.
For over 35 years, he taught chemistry, biology, and other life sciences, first at Ardmore Junior High School and then at Lower Merion High School, where he coached crew and football for many years. As a teacher, he fostered an appreciation for learning in his students with his witty and hilarious observations of life. He developed lifelong friendships with his fellow teachers. While he enjoyed teaching, he was a coach at heart. He was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren compete on the playing field. He was also a jazz aficionado, with a particular affection for big bands, and loved nothing more than listening to his vast music collection at high volume, much to his wife's dismay. His hobbies included collecting coins and stamps, attending sporting events, playing with his dogs, and traveling to Kiawah.
Ronald was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He looked forward to visits from his children and grandchildren and instilled in them a love for sports, music and the arts, as well as a tolerance for chemistry. He had an amazing memory and told entertaining stories. His loving wife, Barbara Jean (Brennan) Miller predeceased him, but he is survived by his six children, Dolores Wittelsberger, Barbara Miller Lussier, Thomas Miller, Tina Hanley, Camille Miller Pedraza and Melanie Miller, thirteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one more on the way. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service on Wednesday, June 7, at 11:30 am, at Alleva Funeral Home, 1724 East Lancaster Avenue, Paoli, PA 19301. Visitation will be held on Wednesday morning from 10:00-11:30 am at Alleva's and interment, with military honors, at Calvary Cemetery, 235 Matsonford Road, West Conshohocken.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Franklin & Marshall College.
