Bonnie Marie Hirschman

Bonnie was born on June 25, 1941, the first of three children to John S. Kent and Margaret “Maggie” J. Young in San Francisco, CA. She was named Bonnie for a character in Gone With the Wind, but was often called Barbara Marie by her father when things became more “serious.” The family traveled quite extensively throughout Northern California, with a short stint in Hawaii, as her father worked his way up the professional ladder with Union Oil Company, including San Francisco, Eureka, and Oakland, CA as well as Elko, NV. Upon graduation from Oakland High School, she worked as a secretary for Allstate Insurance in Sacramento, CA.

Bonnie lived a full life as a wonderful military wife, mother, and homemaker. Once her children were of school age, she chose to rejoin the workforce as a secretary at the Bank of the Midlands and then with the Papillion-LaVista School District. Starting in 1996, Bonnie also volunteered in the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program; helping children through the court system. This continued throughout her remaining years, eventually helping a total of 17 children from 9 separate families in Sarpy County, NE.

In 2004, she completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Resources from College of Saint Mary, Omaha. She loved to cook, took advantage of any free time to travel, was highly skilled with knitting needles, and enjoyed her bi-weekly outings to play bridge with her girlfriends. Bonnie’s passion for the arts was obvious by her annual membership to the Omaha Symphony, where she enjoyed many performances with family and friends. She also took delight in her flower garden, mainly her roses. She also enjoyed the entertainment of sports, which is evident from her collection of College World Series t-shirts, and was an avid fan of any San Francisco-area sports team.

Mrs. Hirschman was active in the life of the church at both St. Peter Cathedral, Marquette, MI and St. Columbkille, Papillion, NE working with many stewardships including religious education teacher, rectory secretary, and was a member of small faith group.

Within all of these facets of her time with us, she fostered many lifelong friendships, and cherished each and every one. Most of all she loved her family and instilled in her children strong values that have served them well. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

Mrs. Hirschman is survived by her sons, Colonel Keith A. Hirschman, USA, Ret. (Staci) and Kenneth A. Hirschman; her daughter, Kimberly A. Hirschman; grandson, Erik S. Hirschman; and four granddaughters, Emily G. Hirschman, Annelise M. Hirschman, Margaret M. Phillips, and Molly L. Phillips. She is also survived by her brother, John Kent, and sister, Kathleen Kent.

Bonnie’s wake will be held at Kahler-Dolce Mortuary, 441 N. Washington St., Papillion, NE, on Friday, March 1, 2019 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm (Rosary scheduled for 7:00pm). A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Columbkille, 200 E. Sixth St., Papillion, NE, on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Noon. Luncheon to follow at 1:00 in the Social Hall of the church. Internment will take place at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma, CA, Saturday, March 16, 2019 at 10:30am.
