Born on August 12, 1957, in Rochester, New York, Charles was a man of many talents and virtues. Known for his hard-working, compassionate, faithful, and resilient nature, he also had a humorous side, often described as grumpy yet strict.
As a military child, Charles moved with his parents to Washington, where he later pursued higher education at Washington State University, earning a B.S. in Biology. His career was marked by significant achievements in the United States Air Force as a pilot and instructor, eventually becoming the Chief of Training for the 38th Reconnaissance. An academic ace in pilot training, he earned the nickname "Iron Major." Beyond his military career, Charles was an iron worker, trucker, and farmer, showcasing his diverse skills and adaptability.
Charles married Mary Kathleen Kite on May 17, 1980, in Kennewick, Washington, a day before the historic eruption of Mount St. Helens. Together, they had three sons: Johnathan Roosevelt Pyke, born on October 2, 1981, in Pullman, Washington; Thomas Lincoln Pyke, born on September 25, 1984, at Reese AFB; and Charles Jefferson Pyke, born on November 21, 1988, at Minot AFB.
A lover of the outdoors, Charles found joy in mountain climbing, cycling, gardening, playing guitar, camping, hiking, reading, and skiing. His passion for nature was matched by his commitment to community service, as he was actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America and the ski patrol.
Charles will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by friends and family. His legacy of love, dedication, and humor leaves an indelible mark on all who knew him.
