Born to Paul and Pauline Getzschman on September 2, 1937, David was the youngest of eight children. He was brother to William, Paul, Dorothy, Frederick, Caroline, Edward and Richard. He grew up alongside his nephews and they had many adventures riding the streetcars of Omaha and playing in Spring Lake Park. He graduated from South High in 1956. Dave served several terms in the U.S. Army Reserve over the course of four decades. In addition to his military service, he worked in a variety of professions, including home building, contracting and a longtime career at Western Electric/Lucent/Avaya.
While working at Western Electric, Dave met Barbara Safarik and they married in 1974. They started a family with Julie in 1975, Emily in 1977, and Michael in 1981.
Dave had many hobbies. He was skilled at any endeavor that required a creative eye or a well-executed plan. He often spent more time planning his next project than completing it. From woodworking to silversmithing, he always had an idea in the works.
Dave also loved fishing and camping and spent many years as a youth mentor and Scout leader for Boy Scout Troop 359. Through that experience, he and other Scout leaders established a philanthropic organization, the Shepherds, to raise money for youth and school programs. Dave’s children particularly enjoyed the group’s fireworks fundraiser, which led to legendary 4th of July celebrations at the Getzschman home.
Dave found joy in taking the road less traveled. He loved to drive and show his friends and family shortcuts, scenic routes, hole-in-the-wall local restaurants and lesser-known attractions, sharing his knowledge of Omaha history and geography along the way.
You always knew Dave was nearby by his whistling. Whether it be birdsongs, favorite music or something he made up, there was always whistling, and often singing, too.
Above all else, Dave loved his family. He made sure we understood the importance of knowing where we were going, as well as where we came from. Dave had hundreds of stories that we would hear repeatedly in the interest of understanding the fabric of family and preserving memories. He encouraged lasting relationships with the Getzschman family, and also Barb's family, who he loved as his own.
Dave is survived by his cherished wife of 49 years, Barbara, children, Julie and Leon Williamson, Emily and Jay McArdle, Michael and Lynn Getzschman, grandchildren, Stephen and Samantha Bloom, Taylor Bloom, Ethan Williamson and Ayden Longcor, along with many friends and extended family members. He also leaves behind his much-loved dog, Max, who will greatly miss his Papa.
Dave will be missed beyond words, and we are grateful for so many years of unwavering support, commitment and unconditional love. Dave, we hope that you are “finer than frogs’ hair” once again.
