Eugene Thomas Atkinson

Eugene Thomas Atkinson, born October 27, 1926, in Omaha, Nebraska, passed away on August 29, 2026, at the age of 99. He leaves behind a life that was richly lived—marked by steady devotion, quiet courage, and a gentleness that made others feel safe, seen, and valued. Though the years were many, they were filled with purpose, and his memory will be held close by all who knew him and were shaped by his presence.

Eugene served his country through the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, and the U.S. National Guard, reflecting a faithful sense of duty and an unwavering loyalty to something larger than himself. He was placed on the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum Military Wall of Honor. In every season of life, he was known as hard-working and wise—someone who did what needed to be done, and did it with care for the people around him. His professional life also included work as a lawyer and a judge, roles that suited his thoughtful nature and the deep respect he earned through fairness, patience, and selfless commitment.

Beyond his service and career, Eugene found joy in the quiet, meaningful rhythms of daily life. He kept bees, tending them with the same steady attention he brought to all he loved. He also gave his time to Habitat for Humanity, offering practical help and wholehearted support—devoted to building not only homes, but hope. Music was another lasting companion; whether playing the violin or the viola, he carried beauty into the world with a gentle strength that never sought attention, only connection.

Above all else, Eugene was a beloved family man—cherished for the way he showed up, the way he listened, and the way he loved without condition. He is preceded in death by his wife, Emiko Atkinson. Eugene is survived by his son, William Atkinson; his daughter, Patricia Atkinson; his grandson, Sean Atkinson and wife Elizabeth; and his great grandson, Sean Atkinson II. His legacy lives on in them—in the values he modeled, the steadiness he offered, and the devoted love that anchored his home and extended outward into the lives of others.

In the words shared in his honor: “Although Your Story Has Come To An End, Your Journey Has Only Just Begun, Safe Adventures.” Eugene’s story was one of brave fidelity, thoughtful kindness, and a life well given—and it will continue to inspire, uplift, and guide those who carry him with them.

VISITATION Wednesday, September 16, 2026 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm; followed by a MEMORIAL SERVICE at 12:00 pm, all at the Mortuary. COMMITTAL 1:30 pm at Omaha National Cemetery.
