Evelyn Marie (McBride) Carter was born on January 22, 1935, the first child of Herman and Blanche (Sack) McBride in Springfield, Nebraska. She grew up on the family farm and later lived in town. She graduated from Springfield, NE in 1952. After graduating, she attended Peru State and University of Nebraska Omaha obtaining a teaching certificate. She went on to teach at many one room schoolhouses in rural Sarpy County. She then went to Gretna and taught one year after the schools consolidated.
Evelyn met Harley William Carter and married him on June 21, 1957. They lived in the town of Gretna, NE for one year until they purchased a piece of property eight miles south of Gretna. It is here where they built a house, and she became a stay-at-home mom and raised three children. Nick Carter was born in 1958, Kathleen Carter in 1975, and Adam Carter in 1983. Evelyn was the oldest woman to give birth, at the age of forty-eight, in 1983 in the state of Nebraska. She also spent a lot of time with her two grandchildren, and of the last two years, spent as much time as she could with her two great-grandchildren.
She enjoyed reading westerns and mystery books, watching old western TV shows and movies, and sewing/embroidering. Her favorite westerns starred John Wayne. She thoroughly enjoyed researching genealogy and tracing down the ancestry of the entire family.
