Harold D. Mitchell, born June 4, 1936 in Concord, NH joined the love of his life in heaven on February 19, 2019. Predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Shirley E. (Prendergast) Mitchell, infant daughter Diana Lynn, parents Adam A. S. & Laura E. (Greene) Mitchell and siblings Rita Mitchell Dyson, Edward S. Mitchell, Alvin A. Mitchell and Margaret Greene Goodwin. Survived by daughter Deb and her husband Jeff Miner, beloved grandchildren Jen Miner and Rob Miner, sisters in law Anne Prendergast and Nancy Desjardins, and godfather Gerard Brochu, many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Known for his ever-present smile, Mitch loved visiting friends and family, once spontaneously flying cross country to surprise his sister with a personal birthday greeting. He and Shirley traveled the US extensively while full-time RV-ers for several years and twice visited family in Europe including a memorable trip to Ireland with Shirley’s mother and sister.
Sgt Mitchell served as a radio technician in the US Army and a mechanic in the reserves, employing knowledge learned from his first boss, Reginald Sargent, owner of E. Concord Esso Station. He began working for the US Postal Service part time, holding many positions before retiring as Postmaster in 1991. He also restored several cars throughout his life, enjoying ‘tinkering under the hood’ into his 80s with nephew David. He volunteered wherever help was needed: with the Florida Park Service, as a greeter at Immaculate Conception church in Potter Place, and an executive board member with the Postal Union, Andover Lions, and Daytona Beach Amateur Radio Association.
Always ready with a word of encouragement, you knew Mitch had your back in any endeavor, from climbing Mt Washington (twice!) to quitting a (p/t) job to help you move. He led by example and will be missed by all.
Funeral is scheduled for Friday, July 5th, 2019 at 10 AM at St John’s Church, Christ the King Parish, 72 S Main St, Concord, NH. Inurnment follows at 2 PM at NH State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Hwy, Boscawen, NH.
