I just learned of Helen's (aka Buddy) passing. She taught my Girl Scout troop archery during their first trip to Camp Maha in 2012. I distinctly remember what a great role model Helen was to the girls and how she embodied all the traits I hope to pass on to them. Her loved ones can take comfort in knowing her contributions to future generations live on.

Helen will always be remember for her caring heart. She wasn't one to complain even when she was having a rough day. She definitely was someone who didn't let her medical condition limit what she wanted to accomplish. She will truly be missed by all.                        Lora Suhr Kraay

              The written or spoken word cannot adequately express the depth of feeling, sorrow and loss in the passing of someone so loved as Helen Allen. As most of us progress through the decades of our life, we interact with many people, touch more deeply a limited number of others and perhaps intimately affect or have a meaningful impact on our immediate family and very closest of friends.
     
     That this did not hold true of Helen is one of the many uniquely special qualities about her. Helen lived her life with vim and vigor, and the positive influence she had on so many others was magnificent. Every aspect of her character reflected her passion to reach out and aid in changing their life for the better. That passion was expressed in her tone of voice and depth of excitement when she discussed one the many activities in which she coached, led or participated. Archery, Volleyball Referee, sign language, Girl Scouts, autism and cancer awareness only encompass those activities I often heard her speak about or of which I was aware, and I have no doubt there were many others. Helen had both a tremendous strength and a depth of caring rarely observed.
     
     For myself though, one title held more meaning than any of the others. As a teenager, during the formative years of my life, Helen was kind enough to provide a second home to many of us whom were friends with Gene and a role model to whom we could look up. In return for her generosity, she received an influx of adopted kids, a basement that was rarely clean (which is being kind), constant noise and bustle, and very few thanks. One of the only acknowledgements I can remember of all she gave us came in the form of everyone in our group referring to her as Mom or Ma. It wasn't much and it certainly did not do justice to the love, time and real estate she provided for us, but it did signify the deep regard and affection each of our group held for her.
     
     To say I lacked social skills when first meeting Helen, Richard, Neal and Gene would be woefully inadequate as a descriptor; and yet, I was somehow lucky enough to be one of the many deeply touched by Helen's influence. Having that opportunity truly affected my life, allowing me to acquire a group of wonderful friends and begin development of some of the relationship skills so vital to traversing life's obstacles and start the journey of growing as a person.
    
     Any success I may have garnered as this point up till now has certainly not been primarily or even largely due to my own merit. Most of the turning points came with significant help and outside influence and in looking back, it is clear, outside of my immediate family, there have been a select few whom have had an enormous positive impact on my life, altering the course it might have otherwise taken. Helen is without any doubt one of very special people in this group. 

     Thank you Helen. Thank you for your love, time, caring, and undeserved generosity.

Helen was one of a kind.  We enjoyed bowling on a Bowling League with her and Richard.  Wished we could have done it longer.  You have our deepest sympathy.

Buddy I often remember the fun and adventure we had running the health hut at various Girl Scout camps.  I won't forget walking into the health hut & as I introduced myself an immature mouse fell out of the ceiling between us.  We often giggled about that. You loved nature & everything that came with it.   If there's a gator in heaven you're behind the wheel.

Heaven has gained and amazing angel. I will always remember your heart of gold. May peace be with your family.

Helen you have had an amazing impact on so many lives. We will miss you. Wishing your family the peace and blessings that God gives us!

Helen will be greatly missed by all!  She will be remembered for her kindness and huge heart!  Sending love to her family...

Helen did her best to make me a better volleyball ref.  She was always so kind and gentle.  She will be missed in the volleyball world.
