Leland Dale Winterstein, 97, of Louisville, Nebraska, passed away on October 11, 2026. He was born April 26, 1929, in Griswold, Iowa, to Thomas and Nora (Page) Winterstein, and grew up during the Great Depression, which helped shape the steady, kind-hearted spirit that remained evident throughout his long life.
Leland served his country in the U.S. Army and was a Korean War Veteran. In civilian life, he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, Griffin Pipe, and Western Electric. In later years, he continued to offer a warm welcome to others as a greeter at Walmart and at his church, a familiar presence remembered with gratitude and affection.
Leland was grateful for a long life with his wife, and he remained deeply devoted to family. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Louise L. (Witt) Winterstein. He is survived by his stepson, David (Linda) Christensen; granddaughters, Glenda (Craig) Irish and Diana (Chris) Houston; grandson, Tim Christensen; great-grandchildren, Melissa Irish, Aaron Dice, Courtney Dice, Caleb Christensen, and Gavin Christensen; as well as other relatives and friends. He took special joy in the lives of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, holding them close in heart and in presence.
Leland found enjoyment in cheering on Husker football and volleyball, and relaxing with Western television shows and movies. He made a lasting difference to those who knew him and will be remembered with respect and love.
