Leon passed peacefully in his home, October 10th, 2019, with his loving family by his side. Leon was born August 25, 1935 in Walthill, NE. He was 8 of 12 children born to Cecil and Mabel Gilbert.
He attended the Iowa School of the Deaf and graduated from the Nebraska School of the Deaf in 1956. He was a highly recognized athlete lettering in football, basketball and track. It was here he met his wife, Alice Golda. They married, August 16, 1958 and settled in Springfield.
He is preceded in death by parents; son-in-law Chuck Butts Sr.; brothers and sister. Survived by wife Alice; daughters, Debbie (Doug) Holle, and Patti Butts; son Ricky (Miki); 9 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers and 3 sisters.
He retired from Data Documents in 1992. Leon was an avid angler, bowler, woodworker, camper and golfer. As a chairman, he was a driving force with the Great Plains and Hillbillies Camping Clubs. His woodworking skills were instrumental in the remodeling of the Omaha Association of the Deaf. Prior to his passing he presented every child and grandchild a custom made wooden pillar, representing their lives.
Leon beamed with pride when talking of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed being the “life of the party.” His hearty laugh and quick wit will be greatly missed. Stories of his antics will be shared, for years to come.
As per Leon’s request in lieu of a funeral, a “Celebration of Life Service” will be held at 11:30 on Wednesday, October 16, at the Springfield Legion Hall.
