Michael John Carlson was born on January 29, 1962 in Bellevue, Nebraska to Milo D. Carlson and Harriet A. Carlson. The Carlson family lived in Bellevue until an overseas assignment took them to Germany in 1966. When the family returned to the states, they lived briefly in Belleville, Illinois, and then came home to Bellevue, Nebraska. Mike attended Pawnee Elementary, Bryan Junior High, King Ninth Grade Center, and Bryan Senior High School. Mike graduated from Bryan Senior High School in 1980.
From an early age, Mike was an avid reader of comic books and any other books he could get his hands on. His joy of reading continued as he was a proud library card holder at the Bellevue Library until his untimely passing. Mike also loved listening to and playing music. He taught himself how to read complex piano compositions and relished the challenge of learning many musical pieces.
Growing up in a family of musicians, it was not surprising that several bands emerged from the Carlson basement and many of the bands performed in the Omaha metro area for many years, starting in the early 80s. Some notable ensembles were Shadowfax, Madhatter and Tipsy Alligator. The latter developed quite a devoted following in the local bar scene. Mike played guitar, keyboards and sang, doing all three with an unmatched vigor. Mike worked various jobs after graduating high school but creating music was always most fulfilling to him.
When Mike received a cancer diagnosis earlier this year, he attacked the challenge head on with a passion one would expect from him. To the very end, Mike continued to be selfless and more concerned about the impact of his struggles on his family and the beloved cats than his own wellbeing.
Mike passed away peacefully on Friday August 18, 2023, following his valiant cancer battle. He was preceded in death by his parents, uncles, aunts and many cousins. He is survived his brothers Rich (Greta), Eric (Kristy) and Jeff, 6 nephews, and 3 great nephews.
The family suggests memorials be directed to Open Door Mission, Stephen Center or the Nebraska Humane Society.
