Rama Devi Lalljie was born on December 7, 1939, in Guyana, South America, and passed away peacefully on October 8, 2026, in Bellevue, Nebraska, at the age of 86. Rama’s life was marked by a steady devotion to family, a faith in God that guided her days, and a thoughtful way of caring for people—whether they were lifelong friends or someone she had only just met.
Raised as the fourth-born girl and the sixth of ten children, Rama grew up in a home shaped by generosity and responsibility. Her parents also raised two nieces, whose parents had passed, as part of the Persaud family. From early on, Rama’s gifts were clear—especially her strength in math. After graduation, she became a high school math teacher, a role that reflected both her sharp mind and her patient, considerate presence. It was during these years that she met her husband, William (Bill), who was the headmaster (principal) of the school. They married in 1959 and soon began building their family. After establishing careers where they were well respected in Guyana, Rama and Bill made a courageous decision to immigrate to Nebraska, where Bill had made friends during his time studying at Midland College. Rama’s first job in Nebraska was at Mutual of Omaha. Beginning in an entry-level position, she worked diligently and steadily, drawing on her math skills, practical wisdom, and her ability to engage with others in a positive way. Over the course of a 30-year career, she advanced through multiple positions—earning the respect of colleagues and building a life defined by perseverance and purpose.
During these years, Rama’s home life was rich and full. Much of family life centered around her children and their activities. She found joy in simple, faithful routines—gardening (especially roses and vegetables), and going for walks with friends. She also loved cooking, and even more, cooking for others. Rama became known for the care she expressed through food: sharing curry, beef patties, apple pies, her famous braided Guyanese bread, soups, and crème brule’, among many other favorites. She hosted memorable dinners for family and friends, creating the kind of welcoming table where people felt seen, valued, and at home. In retirement, Rama continued to give back, serving through Make-A-Wish and her church in numerous ways. With quiet competence and a willing heart, she used her organizational, computer, sewing, and phone skills to support the Prayer Chain, Meal Packing, and many other ministries—living out her faith through consistent, thoughtful service.
Rama also made time to travel, visiting family around the country, as well as in Canada and Europe. She especially loved being with her grandchildren—first as babies, then as they grew—faithfully attending their activities as a proud and constant Grandma. She was particularly delighted to pass along a love of Guyanese food to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her later years, her great-grandchildren—her “GGs”—were her joy, and she treasured every visit. GiGi, as she was known to them, always made sure she had something special ready: a treat, a stuffie, or quarters won from playing Bingo.
Rama was loved by the many people whose lives she touched. She formed friendships that spanned generations, connecting with others by taking the time to know them personally. She encouraged people to recognize their own worth and to be proud of themselves, offering guidance in a way that felt both honest and kind. Rama also held distinct viewpoints on many subjects—some controversial—and yet she had a rare ability to engage in healthy, constructive conversation with those who disagreed, preserving respect and friendship along the way.
Throughout her life, Rama put her family first. Those closest to her never had to wonder where they stood—her love was steady, present, and enduring. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, of 45 years; her parents; six sisters; and one brother. She is survived by her children Roxanne (Larry) Seieroe and Andre’ (Michelle) Lalljie; grandchildren Amanda (Thomas) Jaekels, Andrea (Bobby) Brown, Hayden Lalljie, and Annalyse Lalljie; great-grandchildren Amara and Marcus; brothers Rohan (Margaret) Persaud and Prakash (Navini) Persaud; sister-in-law Seeta Persaud; and many loving nieces and nephews. Rama was also a beloved Aunty and held a special place in her heart for Bill’s children from his first marriage—Bill Lalljie, Robert Lalljie, Rose Lalljie (Mann)—and their children Lisa Perkins, Bill Lalljie Jr, Kamilah (Alex) Lalljie, and Sheena Lalljie.
A Memorial Service will be held at Thanksgiving Church, 3702 370 Plaza, Bellevue, Nebraska 68123, on November 14, 2026, at 11:00 am. Visitation will take place from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Make-A-Wish or Thanksgiving Church.
Rama’s legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the faith she practiced, the meals and memories she shared, and the countless moments of quiet thoughtfulness that made others feel cared for. Her life remains a reminder that devotion, faith, and steady kindness can shape a home, a community, and generations to come.
Visitation will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 am
