Born on August 12, 1942, William was raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he graduated from Technical High School before enlisting in the United States Air Force—beginning a life defined by steady dedication, resilience, and service. He later earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska–Omaha, reflecting a quiet wisdom and determination that guided him in every season of life.
William served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, retiring with distinction at the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. His career took him to Thailand, Puerto Rico, Guam, and numerous bases within the continental United States. Through hard work and steadfast leadership, he built an exemplary military record, recognized with the Meritorious Service Medal—awarded to him twice. Those who knew him understood that his commitment was never for recognition alone but rooted in a deep sense of responsibility and a generous willingness to do what needed to be done.
In his personal life, William was married to MaryJo until the time of her passing. He was previously married to Carolyn J Hanes (Kaiser), and from that marriage he was the proud father of two sons, Dustin M Hanes and Brett W Hanes. He also leaves behind six grandchildren: Andrew, Emily, Lauren, Matthew, Jack, and Benjamin—each a part of the family legacy he cherished.
Beyond uniform and duty, William found joy in the simple, lasting pleasures that make a life rich: time on the golf course, the loyalty of dogs, and the calm of a good walk. He followed Nebraska Football with the kind of devoted enthusiasm that brought people together, and his humor—steady, familiar, and often perfectly timed—remained one of the many ways he made others feel at ease and welcome.
William also gave his time to the O.C.C.P. (Omaha Coalition of Citizen Patrol), continuing his lifelong pattern of showing up for others and for his community. His presence there reflected the same dependable character that marked his years of military service: a beloved man who worked hard, gave freely, and carried himself with quiet strength.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Gary Ganat, the head of O.C.C.P., for being a great friend throughout the years, and to the Hillcrest Shadow Lake Staff for taking amazing care of our dad.
William Stanley Hanes will be remembered with respect and affection—for the life he built through perseverance, for the wisdom he shared without fanfare, for the generosity he offered in countless ways, and for the enduring love he held for his family and those fortunate enough to know him.
