

Gloria Jane Davenport Mitchell, 105, of Paris, TX went to dwell within the everlasting embrace of our Heavenly Father on Tues, Aug 26, 2014. She loved the Lord and was ready to meet the One who had given her strength and life. The family has scheduled a "celebration of life" in the dining room at Mt. Moriah Funeral Home in Kansas City, MO, Sat. Oct. 4, 2014 at 11:00 am. This will be a time to gather to share stories of family, friends, and faith. Please come with a story, picture, memory or just a smile on your face knowing that you were loved by her. Her request was cremation and no funeral. Mrs. Mitchell’s family provided Bright-Holland Funeral Home the honor and opportunity to arrange her cremations needs. Gloria Jane Hubbard was born December 29, 1908, in St. Joseph, Missouri, the daughter of Edward P. Hubbard and Grace Lenore Steele. Her family moved to Silver City, NM for a year while her dad recovered from TB. They rode a burro to town and back. They then settled in Kansas City, Mo until she married Fred A. Davenport in May of 1929. Three children were born to them, twins, Karl Arden and Jack Arden then younger sister Jane Ann. She loved to teach Sunday School, cub scouts and spend time with her family. While Fred was in the Navy, she went to work at Pratt Whitney as lead lady on conveyor, inspecting small parts. She and Fred divorced in 1946 then she worked for the War Assets Administration, the IRS, General Services Administration and also H. Lynn White Draperies as a biller and bookkeeper. She married Dean Raymond Mitchell, June 1963. Both husbands preceded her in death. She was a Gold Star mother because her son, Jack Davenport, received the Congressional Medal of Honor while fighting in Korea. He died, shielding Bob Smith from a grenade that was thrown into the foxhole, thereby saving his life. He has maintained a friendship through the years with the family. She was also, an Eastern Star Worthy Matron. She is known for her love of people. She was witty, funny and had an infectious laugh. Her joy in life was to serve others, bring love to them, and share the fact that she totally relied on the Lord for her strength. You could never leave her presence without her trying to give you something from her endless supply of homemade crafts. She kept her hands busy with knitting, crocheting and teaching others the skills. She is remembered for her desire to keep her mind active by reading mystery stories, exercising and working crossword puzzles up until 103 years of age. She moved to Paris Texas when she was 98 years old to be close to family. Survivors include one son, Karl Davenport and wife Arlene of Dallas, Granddaughters, Debbi and Tom Cutrell, Paris TX; Vicki and George Fox, Huntington, NY, Cyndi and Jack Stevens, Plano TX. She is also survived by her grandchildren through her daughter, Jane Ann. Pamela Spears of Sterling VA, Gwenn Cochran of Kansas City, MO and Timothy Leahy of Kansas City, MO. She has numerous great and great great grandchildren who adored her.
