Lionel was born to Ralph and Eva Getz on July 19, 1936 in Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Lionel met the love of his life, Georgia Skidmore, having been introduced by neighbor Bill Allen, whom he was serving with in the United States Air Force in Ardmore, OK. They were married August 10, 1958 at Shady Grove Methodist Church. They were to celebrate 62 years of marriage prior to his death. From their marriage, they were blessed with three children; Sharilyn, Frank, and Shanna. Lionel was a graduate of Southern Methodist University in Dallas with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He spent his career working for DuPont at the Victoria, Texas plant. He retired in 1994 and moved to Paris, Texas in 1997 where he made his home.

Lionel was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. He had a love of restoring cars and tractors, giving extra attention to every little detail. He and Georgia were members of the Red River Valley Antique Tractor Club, Red River Valley Honkers Antique Car Club, and former members of the Victoria Corvette Club. Lionel loved sports and was a diehard SMU Ponies and Dallas Cowboys fan.

He is survived by his wife Georgia, daughter Sharilyn, son Frank, sister Evelyn Leonhardt (Roland) of DeMotte, IN. and his sister-in-law Charlene Getz of Monroeville, PA. Other survivors include a multitude of Getz and Skidmore family members and friends.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have many fond memories of time spent with the Getz family, the only family I’ve known that collected Corvettes and had a train set which came down magically from the ceiling! When I got my driver’s license, Lionel asked me to promise that I would wear a seatbelt every time I got in a car, a promise I made and have kept. And when my children learned to drive, I told them about this promise that I made to a family friend when I was 16, and asked them to make the same promise to me, which they did. You are in my thoughts at this difficult time.

Dear Georgia and Family --
Just to let you know we are among those sending special thoughts and prayers during this very sad time.
We're comforted knowing Lionel is with Shanna...a young lady we first met in 1985. And both of us have such fond memories of our visit with you three in Paris, twelve years ago, Georgia.
I'm so glad we've been able to stay in touch all these years.
With heartfelt Love and Blessings,
Betsy & Stefan

Uncle Lionel was such a good role model, teacher, and friend. I will miss all his great storytelling and especially his humor & smile. He had such a great positive attitude on life. I admired him and his "out of the box " thinking.

I am sure he will be playing many Scrabble games with my Dad, Ralph, and Grandma Getz up in Heaven.

His spirit will live on in our memories.
His soul was a gift to everyone who knew him .

2 Corinthians 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

Aunt Georgia, Sharilyn & Frank,
Uncle Lionel was full of both wisdom and humor. His presence will be deeply missed.
We are there in spirit with you as you celebrate him. We are very disappointed that coronavirus has not allowed us to be there in person. And we are very thankful for technology to share in the moments and memories to celebrate him .
We are sending our heartfelt condolences and praying for your peace and comfort with fond memories through this difficult time.
God Bless You!

Uncle Lionel, Thank you for always being so kind and caring to me and my family. You definitely have left a void on Earth. Who else will be so compassionate to religiously call all of your nieces and nephews on their birthdays? I’ll miss that.

Aunt Georgia, Sharilyn and Frank: I love y’all and will continue to pray for comfort and strength as you navigate life without your patriarch. I take comfort in picturing he and Shanna in their glorious bodies with no earthly trials. 🙏🏻❤️
