OBITUARY

Jack Bateman

June 3, 1933March 25, 2010

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Jack Joe Bateman, the morning of March 25, 2010. Born June 3, 1933 to Della and Van Bateman in Oklahoma City, OK, Jack was half Irish and half Native American (Cherokee). He later joined the US Navy, which brought him west. He eventually made his home in Parker, AZ and retired to Salome, AZ with his wife, Yvonne in 1999. Jack was a patriotic American who served in the Navy from 1951 to 1959. Jack was recipient of several Navy medals including 2 Korean Service medals, a National Defense Service Medal, China Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and a United Nations Service Medal. Jack was a lifetime member of the VFW and served as Post Commander 2 years and Quartermaster for 1 year. He proudly flew his American flag at his home in Salome. Jack often spoke of his time and work on the Central Arizona Project as well as his affiliation with the Carpenter’s Union. He was a proud card-carrying member of the NRA. Jack may have been known best as “Jackson” bar tending at many bars and restaurants in town and along the river, where everyone knew his name. Left to cherish Jack’s love and memory are his wife of 22 years, Yvonne Bateman; children, Christina (Bush) & Leo Jimenez and Wyly (Bush) & Chris Wallace and grandchildren Leonardo, Steven, Emily (Jimenez), Maxx (Wallace) and great-grandson Jaden (Jimenez). He is also survived by his eldest sister: Helen Baker (OK); his nieces Karen Warren (AZ), Linda McMahill (OK), Pat Brodie (TX) and nephews Van Bateman (AZ), Lynn Baker (OK), Wesley Haggard (OK) and many others. A celebration of Jack’s life and service to our country will be held Saturday, April 10th at 1:00PM at Parker Funeral Home, including VFW and American Legion Ceremonies. All are welcomed.

I feel that I need to look into a name I noticed. I was given a Blue Jacket's Manual 1942 Edition, the name Jack Batemen is written on the first page. It has been with me for a few years, my ex-mother in law gave it to me between 2004-2008. I recently moved and glanced through as I was unpacking. She did tell me she found it a thrift shop in Fayetteville, NC. I was stationed in Virginia and now transferred to San Diego. To make a long story short. I believe this manual has traveled enough, I need to return it to the proper family. I am a Chief Petty Officer currently serving, I will be glad to return the manual. I miss you Grandpa. When I met you for the first time on my 15th birthday, it was the best one yet. I'll be 18 this February 15, 2011. And I still haven't had a birthday like the one I got to celebrate with you. I only met you once, and I wish I could have seen you one last time. You really meant something to me, since I actually got to meet my biological grandfather. I didn't even get to meet Grandma Dorothy. I know you're in a better place now. I love you and miss you! Hope to see you again. My hopes and prayers go out to your family and Yvonne's family. I love you both.

Yvonne, I'm so glad that we all got together on Sunday the week-end before Jack passed away. We all had a great time just sitting around talking. I really enjoyed visiting you and Jack on the week-ends. It was nice just spending time together, Jack talking about his Navy Days and showing us his old letters from when he was in the Navy that he mailed to his mother and sisters, Jack also talked about all the different places that he had seen and people that he meet over his life time. Yvonne I want you to know what a special person you are taking care of Jack over the past 3yrs. You didn't ask for any help until the last few days that Jack was with you. You are alot stronger person then you thought. I'm so glad that you had Christy and Wyly with you at the end. I think that was one of the reasons that Jack was holding on for. I know Jack was waiting to see his Niece Karen and his Nephew Jack on Friday, but Jack couldn't hold on any longer. Jack has now sailed away on another ship to a better journey. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Jack will be missed. I love you!
