

Marlene “Marty” Faye Joy (Severin) Born on November 13, 1939 to Marvin and Viola (Horseman) Severin of Shubert, NE died in a tragic car accident with her spouse. Marlene was a star athlete at Shubert High School. She attended University of Boulder and University of Nebraska for her Bachelors and received her Masters at the University of Missouri.
She touched many lives through teaching and coaching in women’s athletics. She began her teaching career at Eagle River Public Schools in Eagle River, WI. This was followed by teaching and coaching at Doane College in Crete, NE, Wichita YMCA in Wichita, KS, Peru State College in Peru, NE, and Missouri Valley College in Marshall, MO. Marlene finished her career at McMurry University in Abilene, TX as an assistant professor and Women’s head basketball coach. Coach Joy took great pride in her basketball players having the highest graduation rate of students participating in McMurry University sports programs.
Marlene is survived by her two daughters, Cristy Joy (Mike Ayars) and Tracey (Joy) Plympton (Steve Plympton), and four grandchildren, Chelsea Allman (Desirre (Cavasos) Joy), Collin Pickrel (Madina (McManus) Pickrel, Carlie Pickrel, and Cassandra Pickrel.
Marlene and her infectious laugh will forever be missed.
A memorial has been set up to celebrate Marlene’s life.
