

Geraldine “Gerry” Smith Matheny, age 89, entered her eternal home early Sunday morning, September 3, 2017, surrounded by her loving family and the caring staff at Eagle Pointe Nursing Home. Gerry was born August 10, 1928, to Jesse and Charlottie Southern Smith in Julian, WV. On June 25, 1947, Gerry married David Owen Matheny and she faithfully served in her role as homemaker, and loving mother, dedicating herself to living out Proverbs 31. Raising ten children provided many opportunities to learn new skills and hobbies. Her favorites included camping, fishing and spending time with her family. Gerry was a faithful member of North Parkersburg Baptist Church where she served as a Deaconess, Sunday School Teacher, Project Hope Mentor, Heavenly Helper, Payer Team Member, Bible School and Friendship Kitchen Volunteer. In addition to the church, her smiling face could be seen as a volunteer at the information desk at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She is survived by her 1 children: David Milo Matheny (Nancy) of St. Augustine, Florida; Barbara Ann Smith of Evans, WV; G. Steven Matheny (Beverly) of Parkersburg, WV; Gerald Owen Matheny (Nancy) of Washington, WV; Joseph Allen Matheny (Cheryl) of Vienna, WV; Karen Sue Bibbee (Richard) of Millwood, WV; Martha Lee Turlington (David) of Boone, NC; Kristi Mae Long (Richard) of Cottageville, WV; Billy Raymond Matheny (Karen) of Ravenswood, WV; John Paul Matheny (Susan) of Cottageville, WV; 46 Grandchildren, 37 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great-Great Granddaughter. Gerry was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her husband, David Owen Matheny, her twin children James and Kathryn, and her two brothers and two sisters. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to be sent to be sent to the Friendship Kitchen at North Parkersburg Baptist Church, 3109 Emerson Avenue, Parkersburg, WV 26104. Visitation will be held at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home on Thursday, September 7th from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at North Parkersburg Baptist Church on Friday, September 8th at 2 p.m. with 1-hour visitation prior to the service.
