Barry Lyn Fowlie

Lovingly remembered by many friends and family, we wish adieu to Barry Lyn Fowlie, born July 22nd, 1943, in Brandon, Manitoba, who passed away on January 25th, 2022, in Courtenay. Barry is predeceased by his father Barry A. Fowlie, his mother M. Ruth Mells, his sister Carol Kirkwood, and sister-in-law Kaete Fowlie.          

Dearly missed by his wife Wendy Keating of 36 years, his brother Brent (Laurie) Fowlie, stepson Dennis (Andrea Dixon) Stevenson, daughter-in-law Angela Bahnman, grandchildren Riley & Jarrett Stevenson, nephews Ryan Palethorpe, Jose Gates, Clayton (Sarah Everett) Gates and grandniece Baily, niece Ashley (Matthew) Yeomans and grandnephews Gideon, Ezra, Silas, niece Sarah (Mike) Sangalang, grandniece Gwendalyn, grandnephew Raphael, niece Mandy Keating. Barry was much loved by sisters-in-law Jane Gates, Olwyn Keating-Hoff, and his large extended family of in-laws. 

 Barry had a wide range of employment experiences from survey crew to fisherman, carpenter, crowd estimator, welder, advertising salesperson, back yard mechanic, to truck driver and most everything in-between. He had a small scene in McCabe and Mrs. Miller and enjoyed letting you know he had kissed Julie Christie.   

Nothing intrigued him more than a problem needing a solution unless it was meeting someone who would teach him something new. All this made him the last of the Renaissance men.           

Favorite lifelong pastimes were skiing with friends and playing guitar; quietly at home or with neighbours. When we met someone new, he would surmise, under his breath, “I wonder if he plays?”          

Barry was an insatiable reader and had an amazing memory which made for interesting conversations. In his later years he joined the Fanny Bay Community Association board as the director of Buildings and Grounds. This nearly 100-year-old building and active community kept him busy with projects.       

We hope to have a Celebration of Life at the Fanny Bay Hall later this Spring or Summer.
