Don was the only child of Frank and Doris Rainbow (nee King). He was born in Penticton and grew up in Black Creek, British Columbia,
Don retired in 2006 from Kelowna Flightcraft after more than 40 years in the pilot’s seat. His flying career encompassed the North Pole to the Antarctic with multiple stops in between. Some of his more interesting career moves included two years in Jamaica, and some stops in Trinidad and the Dominican Republic, a stint flying to Punta Arenas, Chile, which was the “tech stop” on the way to the Antarctic, and ferrying Lockheed Electras from Brazil to Calgary. Even with flying to all these interesting places, he was most proud of working with the US Navy on a special research project in the High Arctic.
He enjoyed boating along the BC Coast with his wife of 28 years, Lorenda, on the MV Dauntless, known by his coworkers as simply “The Boat”. Their retirement years were spent on DeCourcy Island which he loved. They also wintered in Hawaii for four years to take advantage of the surf and sun!
His other great love was Great Danes, several of which he had through his lifetime: Nero, Max, Poseidon, and Apollo.
Besides his wife, he leaves behind his two sons and their wives, along with four grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Details will be emailed.
