Edith Margaret AUSTIN

She is survived by daughter, Margaret Sloat; son-in-law, Chester Marshall ; grandchildren, Drew , Becky, Reagan ,Campbell, Keath and Ian; seventeen great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Margaret was predeceased by her husband, John; daughter, Sylvia Marshall; son-in-law, Frank Sloat; step-children, George Austin and Chris Reed; granddaughter, Beverley Stalker; great-granddaughter, Yvonne Witt; and brothers and sisters, Nell McCullough, Stead Hooper, Mary Christie, George Hooper and Audrey Coats.

 Margaret was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, where she graduated as an RN from Calgary General Hospital, class of 1941. She and John raised their two daughters in Victoria, B.C. where she began work at  Royal Jubilee Hospital . After Dad’s death in 1958 she continued at RJH as a head nurse for a total of 25 years.  She was a member of the choir at Metropolitan United Church ( later First/Met ) and with their Street Supper Committee organized dinners for the Open Door for many years. She lived in Qualicum Beach for the last twenty years to be closer to family .There she became a member of St. Stephen’s United Church choir.

She loved life beside the ocean, times with family and friends - especially those at her Piers Island cabin, lunches at her favourite restaurant, Shady Rest, choral music and travel with family or special friend Freda Woodworth ( also deceased ) . She was well-loved and will be missed.

Special thanks to the staff at Qualicum Manor for their loving care and attention to Mum during the last year and a half.

A Celebration of Margaret’s Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, May 24th at St. Stephen’s United Church in Qualicum Beach. Friends and family are welcome.
