He was born to Rufus and Hilda MacLeod on March 3, 1945, in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. John and his wife Gillian made their honeymoon journey from the east coast to Vancouver, BC, in 1967 to pursue what would be a very successful career in the financial sector, and later as a top producer in the local Victoria real estate industry.
John was a man of many interests spanning that of scuba diving, football, martial arts, photography, painting with watercolours, politics, and perhaps his most cherished interest - sailing. John owned many boats over the years and if he wasn't on one, you could find him either reading about them or, at some marina looking and talking about them. He was a yachtsman through and through and had a deep love of the sea.
Always living with "one foot in the sand", Hawaii and the "Aloha Spirit" held a special place in John's heart. It was his and his family's go-to vacation destination. We will forever cherish those times we spent exploring the countryside, wandering through Lahaina, and of course, spending time in the ocean.
Above all this, though, nothing could surpass the love which John had for his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. John's love for his Heavenly Father and his deep desire for all whom he knew to come to know the Lord in a personal way, drove his existence. John was a man of principle, integrity, and character - not shy about speaking his mind and standing up for what he believed to be right.
John is predeceased by his parents, Rufus and Hilda, sister Shirley Conrod. He is survived by his loving wife, Gillian, of 56 years, son Devin (Lydia) and two grandchildren, Ethan and Olivia, of Vancouver, sister Joan Keeping (Gary) and family of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and Shirley and Paul's family of Nova Scotia and Ontario. John also has friends and family in Nova Scotia who will miss him deeply and hold his memory close.
A memorial service will be held at Parksville Fellowship Baptist Church, 550 Pym St., Parksville, BC, on February 24, 2024 at 2:00 PM.
