It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the loss of Mary Ann Humphries who passed away surrounded by family on December 23, 2025 at the age of 71. Mary Ann is at peace now and reunited with her parents, 3 siblings, and some relatives who went before her.
Mary Ann is lovingly remembered by Phil, her high school sweetheart and husband of 50 years, daughters Melissa (Josh) and Sarah (Matt), four grandchildren Keanna, Tevin, Molly and Sidney, and two grandpuppies Rio and Sitka. Mary Ann will also be deeply missed and forever remembered by many family members and friends whose lives were enriched by her kindness and warmth.
Mary Ann was born in Kelowna and grew up in Winfield where she loved riding her horse Nellie in the hills behind her house, swimming in the beautiful lakes, and living an active life full of adventure. She played grass hockey, volleyball, basketball and enjoyed playing clarinet in the band at George Elliot High School. Her fondest memories in Winfield always included spending time with her first and only true love, Phil, her siblings and high school friends that she still enjoyed spending time with.
Mary Ann and Phil were married on June 14, 1975 in Kelowna and owed their first home together in St. Paul, Alberta. They spent many wonderful years together in Calgary where both of their daughters were born, then moved to Lethbridge for 3 years, Whitehorse for 7 years and finally settling in Nanaimo, BC where they spent the last 31 years. Mary Ann was a resident at Stanford Seniors Village in Parksville since August 2025.
Mary Ann truly enjoyed staying at home and raising Melissa and Sarah. The girls will forever remember the endless hours spent with their mom baking, doing crafts, playing games and having fun together. Once Melissa and Sarah were both in school, Mary Ann returned to work part-time at a clothing store and then as a customer service representative for the Royal Bank in Whitehorse and Nanaimo.
There are many fond memories of the time spent in Whitehorse where Mary Ann loved camping, cross country skiing, and building friendships with wonderful people which have lasted a lifetime.
Mary Ann quickly fell in love with the beautiful West Coast and enjoyed all of the incredible things it had to offer. She loved hiking and biking in the trails, swimming in the ocean and exploring the island. One of her most favourite places to be was in the comfort of her home enjoying the gorgeous ocean and mountain view.
Mary Ann had a wonderful love for nature, particularly enjoying sunsets, spring flowers, hummingbirds, and ocean walks where she loved beach combing for hours. She had a special ability to always find the most perfect heart rocks and handfuls of sea glass.
Mary Ann was known for her kind, loving heart and incredible smile that lit up any room. She was always making others laugh and smile and will forever be remembered for her warm and caring nature.
Mary Ann’s love for her family was limitless and will never be forgotten. She was a proud and dedicated grandma who loved playing dolls and playmobil with Keanna and Molly, racing cars with Tevin and Sidney, reading bedtime stories and singing songs to all of them. Bedtimes were the best if grandma was there to tuck the grandkids in. The grandkids will always remember how excited grandma was to build sandcastles with them and play in the waves. Mary Ann was also a constant source of love and encouragement, never missing a baseball game, soccer match, swim meet, or track event to cheer on her grandchildren.
Throughout her life, Mary Ann touched the hearts and lives of many people. She will be incredibly missed. We hope that when you find a heart rock, stop to enjoy a café mocha, go for a beach walk or see a sunset, you think of her.
